Bootle 1891 Census
Still looking for Sarah Ellen Cahill (born Williams). Did I see in someone's post, (possibly Jan 44) that there were missing pages from the Bootle 1891 Census ?? Can't readily access the reference.
Could anyone explain to me that, if this were so, was it fire, incompetence, someone took a bribe so as to confuse me over a hundred years later or a more nefarious reason as to the missing documents.
And the big question **************** Could (WILL) the missing pages ever be found ??
I sit in my room cutting out endless paper dolls in the shape of Sarah Ellen Cahill !!! (Sorry, that;s a little fib !)
Still here,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Yes there are parts of Bootle census missing from 1891, if you go to The National Archives website and do a search for Bootle Cum Linacre 1891 census, a few refs will show and it says on some of them partially missing. I don't know what streets are involved, I would have to go through all the street names, but bearing in mind that some of the streets were built after 1891, so wouldn't have been on the census.
I have no idea where the missing returns are, they may have not survived or perhaps destroyed in some way.

Bootle 1891 Census
Hello Alan,
Just checked with FMP and they actually list the parishes for which the returns are missing from previous censuses, from 1841 thru' to 1871. It would appear that their online versions of the 1881 and 1891 are complete.
I sometimes wonder, whimsically, could Sarah have been an early example of an X-File alien abduction?
Still looking.....

I have actually been to view the images on microfilm in Crosby library and can confirm that it's not just a glitch in Ancestry's filming or any other online site, but the streets are simply not there.
I'm not aware if there is a listing of missing streets anywhere, but from my memory of researching a family in 1881 and they were at the same address in 1901, I believe the missing area to be in the region of Essex Street, Brookhill Road etc.

I have had a quick look at the 1891 on cd and I found that some of the street names that are missing from census (Bootle) Holly Street, Roby Street, New Street part of the infectious diseases hospital (Linacre) these are RG12 2960 ED 5.
It would take a while to get through them all, but that is just a few of them.
Mary, Essex Street and Brookhill Road are there.

I'm glad I only said "I believe" as I was working from memory without my files.

Always appreciative of the quick & helpful responses I get to my questions. One of these days I would love to give help in return.
Thanks a million.
Alan
As regards an X-File abduction, I never had a Close Enough Encounter of Any Kind with Sarah to make a judgement

I should have thought to ask this 10 minutes ago in the previous post.
My last confirmed sighting of Sarah Ellen Cahill was at the birth of her child in November 1888 at 117 Towson St Everton.
Would this address fall into the area of the missing census pages, in that it is obviously not Bootle. But would it be a huge move from Towson St to the Bootle area ?

Use any map site - www.streetmap.co.uk or www.maps.google.co.uk and you can see that Towson Street is still there, maybe only just about, off Robson Street, those roads are gradually being demolished. Not a million miles from Bootle. I often find though that people stay in their own areas rather than changing from one to another, not a hard and fast rule of course.

Bootle 1891 census
As Jan has said there is no doubt that there are streets missing. From memory Colette and I discovered this independently. I was looking for an ancestor who was living in Roby Street. I knew he WAS there because his child was born in 1891 in Roby St - and I had the certificate with the correct address.
Doesn't help of course.....

Hi Alan
I'm not sure if you did this?
Here's details of 117 Towson St 1891 census, perhaps Sarah & child were lodging in the street & have been given the wrong surname?Good luck, yet again!!
Thomas Davies head bn 1854 Wales
RG12/2957/47/19
If I can be cheeky Alan & post a note to Ken
The closest I can get in 1891 is Litherland Rd
1894 Directory New & Holly St listed off here but not their households sadly.
Margaret Jeffers 1858 Ireland

Tina,
Thanks for your continuing interest. Next Tuesday I will go to the Kiama FHS and access the FMP census address site of 1891. I will put in all the addresses in Towson St and see who appears.
An aside: do people know about the Kiama Blowhole, a tourist attraction of magnificent proportions, where under certain weather & tidal conditions, a plume of water spray can rise up to 40 metres in the air ??
Come to the Sunny South Coast of NSW.
Your Thomas Davies from Wales has at least a Welsh surname similar to my Welsh Williams.
You Never Know !!
