James Hamilton Costerton

Post by debbiejallan »

Hi everyone. I posted on this forum before. It's so good. I just wondered if anyone can tell me if there are any old post office books of liverpool or anywhere that I would be likely find information about this ancestor.

James Hamilton Costerton
Attorney-at-Law

He is listed in 'The London Gazette, Aug 7th 1860' as previously having an office at 82 Grove Street, Liverpool, Lancashire.

I found that address online http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/ ... 7/page.pdf

Also I wonder if anyone can help me by telling me where I could look for information on Solicitors around that time. He seems to have worked in a few offices and there is a Costertons Solicitors still in London to this day. I don't know if it dates back to this person or one of his cousins, brothers etc.

Other places where he worked are: Stourbridge, Charrington Street, New Road, London, Lewisham, Kent and King Street, London.Before those Great Yarmouth where he was born and grew up.

Hi Jan

Yes thats him. I have a record of the 1861 census for him living in St Georges Fields in Kidderminster and in 1851 in Norfolk.

I couldn't find anything in the 1860 Liverpool Directory, but I wonder why he married in Liverpool? Do you have a copy of his marriage cert?

Yes, I have the marriage certificate. They married on 14 March 1859 and the residence for both of them was Bedford Street. It doesn't give a number in Bedford Street.

Not quite what you are looking for but unless there is somebody else with those unusual three names, he may have been in Scotland in 1858 and a keen gardener

From the Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh, Scotland), Tuesday, September 14, 1858
PATHREAD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The second Exhibition for the season took place in the Parish School of Crichton on Friday last .... Mr Stewart Dalhousie, after a careful examination, awarded the prizes as follows;

Wow, that's very interesting. I live in Scotland in Glasgow and it was here that the daugher of the James Hamilton Costerton moved to with her husband and son and daughter from Gibraltar. Other cousins of the family were living in Glasgow too.
