1891 CENSUS O'Brien

Post by Marie »

Could anyone explain why, what looks like an older child, would be shown beneath a younger child in a census return. The names are John and Mary O'Brien children Elizabeth and Mary Ann at 16 Edward Street?

Mary Ann was born on 17th March 1881 but I cannot find her in 1881 census. Strangely, I can find a John and Mary with a baby Thomas in that census and John worked in the Sugar Refinery where my relative worked and was reported to have died in an accident there. They are living at 46 Ainsworth Street which also a street my mother told me her grandmother lived in.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Marie

I have found a Mary O'Brien B 1881 down as Grandaughter of John and Elizabeth O'Brien with her mother Mary Elizabeth O'Brien B 1853 - Sailors wife. John O'Brien is down as an Engine driver in Sugar works. They are at 4 Latham Street Kirkdale RG11/3682/39/8

Maybe this is who you are looking for as Thomas the son of the John and Mary in Ainsworth Street is 3 months old so they can't have had another child in March.

Hello Marie,
Re the younger child being above the older one on the Enumeration Form..
Probably a simple mistake by the head of household in giving the names of the children to the 'man at the door'. Officialdom did not approve of crossings out etc on the form. I have seen several examples similar to yours.

Like Eileen, I found Mary Ann O'Brien with her g.parents here:
RG11 - Piece: 3682 - Folio: 39 - Page: 8.

CENSUS O'Brien 1881

I will look at that one but I know Ainsworth St was a family address. I don't think any of the family lived in the Kirkdale Area.

Thanks

O'BRIEN 1881 CENSUS

I have looked at that one but Mary's name was Hughes prior to marriage and she, as far as I am aware was born in Liverpool, husband was born in Ireland. So unless she was living with in laws their names would have been different.

Hi Marie
Could Mary Ann have been born/rego'd before John & O'Brien's marriage to Mary?
Perhaps registered under the maiden name?
She could be lower in the "pecking" order on the 1891 census as she was not John's child?

Or she was John's child but Mary was not her mother??

Just a thought

This post needs to be linked to your previous one.

Have you got any proof that Mary's maiden name was Hughes such as one of the children's birth certifictaes? Did you get the marriage of John O' Brien to Mary fleming given you in your previous post? If you didn't you really do need to get proof of who Mary A actually is.
