Edward Barratt-Merchant Seaman Records

Post by BarrattFamily »

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me with my Edward Barratt search. Are there any electoral rolls (or something like that) available for the years 1920 to 1929?

I have posted previously on this forum about discovering last year that my husband’s grandfather, Edward Barratt, had a family in Liverpool before leaving them to come to Australia and start a new life/new family.

I have tracked relatives down in Liverpool and I’m now well on the way to discovering about his life in Liverpool and his first family.

I received a merchant navy Record of Service card in the mail today. I had forgotten about my enquiry last year to the Australian National Archives. The card gives a date discharged in Brisbane of 4/4/1929 and has deserted written next to this date. I’m positive it is my Edward Barratt but I want to try and confirm it by linking his address that he gave on the service card. Here are all of his known Liverpool addresses.

1911 - Edward was living with his parents at 5 Rupert Terrace, Garden Lane, Everton Brow.

1920 - Edward was living at 5 Rupert Terrace, Garden Lane, Everton at the time he was married to his first wife.

1921 - When their first child was born they were living at 7 Rupert Terrace, Garden Lane, Everton.

1924 - When their second child was born they were living at 5 in 3 Court, Garden lane, Everton.

1926 - When their third child was born they were living at 108 Upper Beau Street, Liverpool.

1928/1929 - Edward lists his home address as 24 Everton Road, Liverpool on the Record of service card.

1930 - Edward’s wife and children are living at 21 William Henry Street, Liverpool but Edward was gone to Australia by then.

Kind regards

Electoral rolls for the time you want are available on film at Liverpool Record Office. they are not online. Perhaps your new found Liverpool relations would go and search for all the dates you want.

Thanks Hilary,

I'm going to Liverpool in July so I may just spend the day there myself! I wish I was going for months because I will probably need it.

I know it's very time consuming going through electoral rolls but I thought there may have been an easier way to find out if Edward at 24 Everton Road was the same person as the Edward that was at all of those other addresses.

If I can find that Agnes was also with Edward at 24 Everton Road I will have my confirmation. The merchant seaman record is great because it tells me when he left. I've been searching for years to find that out.

Thanks again for your help
