Hi and welcome to the forum. As you have given no dates that you are interested in I did a general search of the censuses using both Rainhill and St Helens as keyword. The only one I came up with was this

1851
29 Crab Street, Windle, St Helens, Lancashire
William Hurst Head M 51 Arber Maker Lancashire Winstanley
Ann Wife M 46 Lancashire Windle
Samuel son 15 Coal Miner " "
Agnes daur 11 scholar " "
James Taylor U Visitor 17 Coal Miner " "
HO107; Piece: 2195; Folio: 674; Page: 65

Any help?

Perhaps if you want some help you could be more specific with the details - ie date of death and also birth, who did she marry and when, what was her maiden name?

If it's descendants of the person that your friend is interested in perhaps she would like to read our suggestions here http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=8154

In those circumstances it is the cemetery people themselves that you need to contact, they should be able to tell you why the name changed, presumably upon the death of the owner.

Hi Julie,

A grave can be transferred on after the death of the owner either by the person saying they were the only person entitled to inherit it, i.e. an only child, or by all the other equally entiled people signing a declaration to say they wanted it transferring to one person or held jointly between more than one, the papers have to be witnessed by a commisssioner for oaths or JP.

It has got a lot stricter in recent years, though in 1999 I had my gt aunt buried in a grave owned by her mother who had been dead over 70 years, I suspect in your case their might have been a family dispute.

Have a look on the cemetery online records and see who else is buried in the grave, it might give you a clue!
