Rbt Mains Brownlow Hill Workhouse

Post by col »

Hello, is anyone able to help me with information on my grt grt grandfather Robert Mains b1823c Ireland and listed in the 1881 census as an inmate in this workhouse. Occupation dock lab. Family not in workhouse!

1871 living with wife Margaret (Jones) & children James, Rbt & Ellen at Raymond St Crt Hse, Liverpool.

Nothing more on him after 1881.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Liverpool Record Officeholds the records for the Liverpool Workhouse, but from their online catalogue it's not clear if they would have the Admissions for the date you are interested in. The link I have given includes an email address, you could write and ask them if they have any details available for the date in question.

It may be that Robert was ill, workhouses were often hospitals also. This is a good site to find out about them http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ including Brownlow Hill with pictures.

The death certificate might help, you don't give his date of birth - is this entry possible?
Robert Maines Q1 1884 Liverpool 8b 84 age approx 55.

The admission and discharge registers do cover this period and are available on microfilm only.

Mains

Post by Tina »

Hi Col
Welcome from the downunder crew :)
1861 census looks like the courts in Emma Ann St Vauxhall area
Robert is 40 dock labr, Margaret only 25 both bn Ire, big age gap.
James is 9mnths?, not sure very hard to read bn Lpl.
Can't find his birth, suspect surname misread.

Col, are they listed as MARES in 1871 census?
No correction has been sent into Anc##
Robt 48, Margt 36, James 10, Albert 8, Ellen 1 week.

1881 as Margrett Manes listed as married Raymond St
with the kiddies.

Any number of reasons why he was in the workhouse in 1881, listed as married 62 bn Antrim dock labr. There was a hospital attached.
Sending for his death cert will give you the answer.

Thanks Mary A, Katie & Tina for such quick replies - such a welcome!

I have sent email to Liverpool Rec Office & will see what happens from there.

Have found family as Manes 1861, 1871 & 1881.

Since found "possible" Margaret MAINS(50) & Wm & Ellen 1891.

1911 possible Wm MAINES (37), wife Ann & children.

I have no idea of when Rbt or Margaret died. I don't think that would be his death entry. Appears to have been born in 1820. 1823 birth date listed in 1871 census.

Rbt & Margaret marr 1859 Liverpool, and if I have the right Rbt, prior to that he was marr to Mary Jane MARTIN, and seems to have abandoned her & children in Northumberland!! This is my challenge to prove if he is the one & same Rbt Mains! So I am looking for any small clue that might help.

Many thanks
Col

Liverpool workhouse Brownlow Hill- Robert Mains

Contacted Liverpool Rec. office for info on workhouse records but they can't help me directly - the search takes more than the 15 min limit. They requested I fill in a Research Offer Form but I can't locate it on their site - shall keep on trying.

Is this something that some kind person could do for me if they were going into the office for themselves, or can it only be done by one of their own researchers - does any one know? And perhaps I'm asking a bit too much of people anyway?

I believe it will be a search that could be done by any researcher, if it's on microfilm it will be available to everybody.

We do have some of our kind members who do quick look ups for others while they are doing their own research, but of course it does depend on how long it will take. If there is an index it would be easier, but if the only means of finding him is by trawling through the records page by page, then yes it might well be too much to ask.

Just have patience and if anybody thinks they can do anything they will reply on here, can't promise.

Hi Col
You will have seen in the forum LRO look up requests.
Perhaps put a new post asking for SKP (some kind person) to look up the marriage in 1859 at Our Lady & St Nicks
Margaret Jones to Robert Mains sept qtr rego.
It will give details of their fathers, addresses.
All the best

Robert Maines Liverpool Workhouse

Post by Katie »

Hi Col

I looked in the register for The Liverpool Workhouse and here are the details
Ref: 353 SEL 19/36

Date of Admission 1/4/1880
Name Robert Maines
Age 60
Address 3/13 Hornby Street
Religion: Church of England
Discharged: 3rd October 1881
=================================================
Ref: 353 SEL 19/36

Date of admission: 6/12/1881
name: Robert Maines
Age: 53
Address: 8/14 Tatlock Street
Religion: Church of England

Carried over into next Ledger
===============================================
Ref: 353 SEL 19/39

Date of Admission: 6/12/1881
Name; Robert Maines
Age 53
Religion Church of England
Discharged: 18th January 1884 Died
===============================================

Ref; 353 SEL 18/14

Date of Entry 6/12/1881
Name Robert Maines
Age 53
Religion Church of England
Occupation Labourer
Married
Address 8/14 Tatlock Street

===============================================

As you can see from these entries Robert on his first admission was listed as being 60 years.

On the Second admission in December 1881 he had lost 7 years and he was recorded as being 53

You should not discount the death registration that Mary A found in March quarter 1884. If you can be certain that the Robert Maines recorded on the 1881 Census in the Workhouse is your Robert then the death in 1884 is for the same person.

Hope this helps

Hello Katie

As I have just explained to MaryA, I am very sorry that I haven't acknowledged your reply before now but if it wasn't for her notifying me of my non reply I would have been none the wiser of your posting - for some reason I never received notification that I had a new message. I can't even suggest that it might have gone in with all my scam mail, why this one only & none of the previous?

So my sincerest apologies.

THANKYOU very much for your research, so much appreciated, and a quick read thru' looks like it might indeed be my Rbt!. I am just about to set off to work so shall take a good look at it tonight & let you know.

Col :D

Think I will have to sit on this one for the time being.

I can see that we have the right Liverpool Robt but before forking out for yet another cert to find the elusive Rbt, will try & gain some more decisive evidence that he is indeed my Rbt from NBL. I'm guessing that I won't glean any extra crucial info from a death cert anyway.

Thank you one & all for all your help & time given to get me this far, very much appreciated, shall let you know if I end up claiming him as mine!

Back to the drawing board........

Cheers
Col
