Hayes Saddlers

Post by ps »

I would appreciate any information regarding the Hayes family who were saddlers.
Cornelius Hayes born 1825 had a saddle making business and lived at Back Orford lane.
He had 8 children, 4 daughters and 4 sons Joseph, Francis Xavier, James and John.
Francis Xavier and James were also saddlers.
I am interested to know whether the family continued the occupation of saddle making and if there are still members of this family in Warrington.

Hi and welcome to our forum.

You don't say what information you have and just what you are looking for. I will give a couple of censuses so that our friends here can see the background to the family.

1841
Orford Lane, Warrington, Lancashire
All born in County
Joseph Hays 60 Weaver
Thomas 40 Weaver
John 30 Cotton Winder
Cornelius 15 Sadler
HO107; Piece 521; Book: 11; Civil Parish: Warrington; Enumeration District: 14; Folio: 35; Page: 13

1851
Battersby Lane, Warrington, Lancashire
Cornelius Hayes Head M 26 Saddler Lancashire Warrington
Mary Ann Wife M 27 " "
Ellen daur 9 Scholar
Elizabeth daur 6 " "
Sarah Ann daur 4 " Swinton
Joseph son 1 " Warrington
Francis Xavier son 1 month " "
HO107; Piece: 2203; Folio: 378; Page: 35

The son Francis appears to have carried out his business of saddler and harness maker later in life in Salford rather than Warrington.

Cornelius Heyes married Mary Ann Hoult at a Civil Marriage in Warrington in the 1st Quarter of 1844, Warrington 20 641. This was possibly a second marriage for one of them? Could Ellen be Mary's child from a previous marriage? or is the age just out a bit.

There is a birth of an Ellen Fanny Hayes Q3 1842 Warrington 20 816. Never mind, this would appear to be the child of Samuel Hayes and Eliza.

Thank you Mary A
I know that Francis Xavier (my great grandfather) went to Salford and continued the saddle business.
However, he died when my grandfather was 20. It appears the business wasn't continued as my grandfather became a carter even though he too had been a saddler.
Francis Xavier had a brother, James who was also a saddler and remained in Warrington. I was curious as to whether his descendants continued this skill.
Thanks again.

I think it might be worth enquiring in a local newspaper, especially if they have an Old Pals section where descendants might catch sight of any message posted. Perhaps you would have some luck with the http://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/
