My great grandfather when he was filling in his 1911 census form wrote down the above as the company he worked for and put in brackets (tin smelters). Does anyone know more (I could hardly know less) about this comapny? I am not sure from the form whether it is William AND Harvey or one name. It might even be Harry. I'm afraid he literallyblotted the form when filling it in.

William Harvey
Hello KWR,
Just google 'William Harvey tin smelters'. Almost the first hit to pop up will be a reference to a book - 'Colonialism in Africa, 1870-1960'. The William Harvey company has a prime mention in it and might be a good starting place for a history tour.
Cheers,
Dickiesam

Thank you everybody for your replies.
Reading them I'm reminded of Basil Fawlty. He might have replied to my question by saying "Why not try the bl****** obvious?" I've followed your suggestions and now know more than I did before about tin smelting. There are records but I don't know what as yet.

I believe that Williams Harvey had a factory in Bootle, Lunt Road. It was called the Mellanear and was still working until about the 1970's. Check the Bootle site where I think that people have asked about it.

Quite right!
I've been through what was said about the place. No wonder my father hated it when he worked there. Below is a comment from someone who lived close by - thought you might be interested....
It had a nasty health reputation. I believe workers were given a pint of milk to drink each day. This is all hearsay, but I know the employees were not the healthiest you've seen. I expect someone may confirm it. I do know however that it was securely fenced and boarded when it became empty. When it came down the land where it stood and where the park is, was severly contaminated. Up to six foot depth of concrete was poured onto the land and left for many years. Then they landscaped it. They cannot build houses on there yet, I believe.
By the way Tina thanks for those two references - reliable and useful as ever.
