Sunnybank Orphanage, Arnside and Hostel of Hope, Liverpool

Post by Simon Bailes »

Hello all, I posted a couple of years ago and got some interesting information but have now hit another brick wall. I am searching for information on the Sunnybank orphanage in Arnside, Cumbria and the Hostel of Hope which is linked to 140 Bedford Street and 47 Colebrook Road in Liverpool.

My grandfather, William Albert Posthlethwaite (later Nicholls), was adopted from the Hostel of Hope in 1912. His mother is listed as Annie Elizabeth Postlethwaite of 156 Garmoyle Road, Toxteth in 1912. She was working as a Domestic at Spring Bank, Laurel Road, Fairfield.

I am interested in how Annie Elizabeth ended up giving up my grandfather and how the Hostel of Hope became involved.

Any help or ideas would be greatfully received.

Simon Bailes.

Out of curiosity, I checked Constance M Whishaw born Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in the 1911 census and discovered that she was living in Long Ashton, Somerset. Seems strange since you have letters later than this unless she was just taking a holiday.

There is also an Elizabeth Cooper age 52 in the household.

checked the 1891 & 1901 censuses for arnside the home is there with the whishaws, house mother and brother who is doctor....guests listed as visitors.....seems they stayed during pregancy and confinement then left.....no babies listed on censuses....though I did google the home and found several people looking for info on relatives adopted from there...

I know this is a very old post but if anybody finds out where Sunnybank Orphanage was in Arnside I can take a photo.
