Holt/Coppell Family help

Post by Chopper2908 »

Hi, I’m new to this forum so apologies if I’m asking anything inappropriate. I’m trying to solve an age old genealogy question in my family relating to the names Coppell and Holt. I have a very complicated family tree involving a wider family adoption and re-marriages. The fable told by numerous strands of my older family is that Margaret Holt who married my great grandfather Thomas Coppell 21/02/1904 at St Titus, Liverpool, was a member of the Holt Shipping Family who was disowned by the family for marrying a widower (Thomas had previously married Esther Meade in 1895). I would like to prove or disprove that theory and follow Margarets family line.
My research has drawn a complete blank in terms of finding that specific Margaret Holt and anything about her including her birth record etc.
The only other clues, contained in her marriage certificate are that at that time she lived at 70 Leta Street, Walton and that her father Thomas Holt, a Ship-wright was deceased at the time of her marriage. She was stated as being aged 22 years at the time of the marriage and I think she was born in 1882.
Ive also drawn a blank in terms of being able to identify the right Thomas Holt too.
This is in effect my first proper stab at genealogy. Ive enjoyed it but found registration on the various sites very helpful in terms of other And sources such as Census info but not in solving this one.
Can anyone provide any info or help in how I might be able to solve this?

A possibility? In the 1881 census in Lydiate there is Thomas Holt, 30, ship's carpenter (= shipwright) born Liverpool, with wife Nancy Ann 39 from Accrington, and 4 children. In the 1891 census Nancy Ann is in Neston Street, Walton, a widow aged 50 with 3 children including Margaret aged 9 born in Lydiate Lane.

Thomas Holt and Nancy Ann Hargreaves appear to have married in West Derby RD in 1870

Searching the GRO for births, Thomas Holt, 1840 -/+2 years, Liverpool/West Derby. only 2.

1842, mmn, White, can be dismissed, she married William Holt

1841, mmn, Battersby, Ann Battersby married Thomas Holt, 1840, St Nicholas, Liverpool.

Thomas Holt was an Upholsterer, possible tenuous link to cabinet maker if he worked with furniture and that was what Thomas jnr remembered.

A possible death for Thomas Holt, aged 29, buried at St Mary's, January 1849, Leycaster St?

Ann Holt nee Battersby married William Hallwood, 1850.

Ann Battersby's father was Thomas Battersby, Brewer, perhaps there's an link there with Thomas Holt running a pub, 1871?

I'm not seeing any connection with the Holt shipping family. The shipowning Holts were the sons of George Holt, a cotton broker.
