Question about modern Everton

Post by BarbCJY »

I will be in Liverpool in April. I’m planning a walk in Everton in connection to my Jones family history. After reading about the history of Everton Park, and listening to Tony Flanagan’s moving folk song, “It All Came Tumbling Down” I decided to begin there. It’s very close to St. George Church on Heyworth Street, where my great-grandparents were married. (I learned that from its online records – also found the baptismal records of most of their 8 children there.) Then I’ll follow St. Domingo to Oakfield Road, where the family lived at #89 for over a decade in the 1840s and 50s. I may also detour to Crouch Street where they lived earlier. I believe it’s nearby but haven’t pinpointed it yet. Then I’ll go on to Stanley Park, as I’m interested in the Victorian parks, and imagine the family may have spent time there. Finally, my husband wants to see the nearby Anfield Stadium.

I hope that my question won’t offend anyone. I only know modern Liverpool from Internet research, and don’t know anyone who lives there. (Although my parents kept in touch with some relatives their age, my generation has not been in touch.) I do know that this is a very old part of town, so I’m hoping that those who know the city will advise me if it’s an area where tourists can feel comfortable wandering around.

If anyone has pertinent knowledge of Everton in the nineteenth century, that would be a bonus. Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't at all feel that you will be uncomfortable around Everton, enjoy your viewing.

One thing you may find useful is to check for the location of any of the streets in 1901 if you can't find them in a modern map, and you can do this here http://www.liverpool-city-group.com/str ... z-1901.htm

Somewhere you may wish to drive by, which you probably will if going to Everton Park is Prince Rupert's Tower - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everton_Lock-Up

and Blue on our forum would not forgive you if you visited Anfield and not Goodison also, you can see how close they are on opposite sides of the park from each other on this map https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Wal ... -2.9608585

You will pass the Shankly Gates at Liverpool ground, but If there are any security men around ask if you can go inside and see the Hillsborough Memorial, a very emotional memorial for Liverpool.

If you plan on doing any research whilst you are here, we host a Help Desk between 1.30 and 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons at 3rd Floor, William Brown Street Library, so if you need any help come along and we can show you the microfilms and machines. Bring ID with you in case you want to use the computers and if there is anything you would like to see in the Archives, it's best to email them in advance and give 24 hours notice. https://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/arch ... y-history/

I hope others have suggestions for you and I hope you enjoy your stay in Liverpool.

Mary, thanks so much for your kind reply. I was reluctant to ask, but have made the mistake a couple of times of letting my curiosity take me places it would have been prudent to avoid, including in Toronto which isn’t far from home. I’m very excited about exploring Everton and will be sure to check out Goodison too, and Stanley Park as well. The links are helpful. I see Lyell Street on the 1901 map. It’s unknown to Google Earth.

Lyell Street has been bulldozed but you can get a feel for what it was like by taking a Google Streetview stroll (or a real stroll) down Handfield Street. There are a couple of pictures of Lyell Street online, including a painting by local artist Frank Green.

Will you have time to do a Stadium Tour of Anfield? https://bookings.liverpoolfc.com/stadiu ... efault.htm

Do you have graves for your relatives? You will be very near to Anfiels cemetery and I love cemeteries so I'm sure someone else must do as well.

Thanks to Retiring Type and Lynne for the suggestions. Stadium tour is a great idea. I'll have to check out the cemeteries online before I go - most likely my great grandparents are buried somewhere in Everton.
