Liverpool c 1700 and the first Dissenting Chapel

Post by Margaret »

I have recently read some pages from the publication "Liverpool in the reign of Queen Anne. 1705-1708.
From a Rate assessment Book of the Town & parish.

It states as a footnote page 100, This was the first Dissenting place or worship in Liverpool.
it was built in Castle Hey , or Harrington Street, the ground running through Lord Street, under favour of Indulgences granted by James11 in 1687.
Upon the request of Mr Thomas Collins, Mr Richard Mercer, and Laurence Fletcher, who desire a house at the end of Lord street , belonging to Mr David Poole, merchant, to be set apart for the exercise or religious worship;.......there are further details on the location and buildings.
I am interested in the history of Mr David Poole merchant and his association with Mr William Massie, of The Moss, Audlem and Denfield House at Rostherne. They appear to be related - either David Poole was his father in law, or his brother in law. Barbara Poole being William Massie's first wife.
I think it might be this same William Massie shown in the rate book as living in Atherton Street although no rate is paid.

David Poole , seems to figure regularly in the history of the Presbyterian movement in this area. And in Liverpool trade.
Previously he had been fined as a church warden in Preston where he was a sugar merchant , this was for allowing a preacher to speak in the church there. He was married firstly to an Elizabeth Taylor in Preston c 1670

So my question is.. where did he come from, and what was his family antecedents etc....
any suggestions on where to look please?
