Customs and Excise

Hope someone can help me access information in the National Archives on the following.
A Grandfather was a Custom,s and Excise Officer ,name John Reid ,I am unsure of his date of birth but 1880 seems a possible date,in Scotland.
He went to live in Newcastle, either already a Customs & Excise officer or became one there, that was around 1915.
In the early 1920s he was transferred to the London Branches.
I have tried to find more with the N A they are the only Museum and Archive that hold all/any copies,of book,s called Hams which list yearly all Customs and Excise personnel with full details, wages,promotions and other data.

Have you emailed them? they are usually very good with advice. I suspect that any documents will be chargeable for download from the NA and may even be subject to the 100 year closure unless you can give evidence of death.

It may need a visit to Kew to get further.

Hi Mary, I went onto a chat with their operative, and you suspect correctly ,she was guiding me to paying for someone to do it, or download at a charge per record, could be very expensive ,but I like to do the investigating myself for the most part, so sooner or later it will have to be a trip to Kew .

Would TNA cover the Isle of Man as I too have an ancestor who was a Customs Officer.
