Marriage at 15/16

Post by graleystives »

My Gg Grandmother, Elizabrth Budworth Bore, was married in April 1867 when she would have been either 15 or just turned 16.
However her marriage cert states that she is 20. Has anybody come across anything similar? Presumably her parents were agreeable to the marriage as they would have given permission?
I would appreciate your thoughts.
Many thanks.

Just my thoughts but it would seem that her parents wouldn't have given permission and so that is why the lie as it would have been legal for her to marry at 15/16 with permission.

Many thanks for your reply.
Would it have been legal to marry at 20 without a parent's permission? I believed that 21 was regarded as "full" in terms of marrying without parental consent?
Would people have to give any proof as to age?
Many thanks.

Help here,

http://www.justcounsel.co/the-common-la ... and-wales/

The Marriage Act 1753 ended the Fleet Marriages and provided that all marriages had to take place in a parish church or chapel, conducted by a minister of the Church of England. Banns had to be called for three weeks, or a Special Licence obtained from a Bishop if a shorter time scale was required. Parental consent for any person under the age of twenty-one was required. Failure to comply with the rules rendered a marriage void. Any clergyman who disobeyed was liable to transportation for up to fourteen years. The minister of the Savoy Chapel tried it on and was duly transported, dying on the ship before it left English waters. This salutary lesson resulted in the clergy knuckling under and obeying the rules.

Hi were her parents George and May Ann on the marriage cert? If yes, she was 9 in 1861 census in Tockie Park.
There is another by the same name born in 1844 was she the bride?? NO...
Me again in 1871 census Elizabeth B is listed as 21 yrs of age bn 1850.
1901 she is 49 bn 1852.
76 yrs at the time of her death in 1928.
