The Manor House - Claughton
The Manor House - Claughton
....as a continuation of my previous posts, William Jackson, husband of Elizabeth Hughes, settled in Birkenhead. He had a large house built for him in Claughton and called it the Manor House. It stayed in the family until my great grandfather, Thomas Hughes Jackson, died in 1930, ( his son, my grandfather, Frederick Huth Jackson predeceased him)when the house was pulled down and the land sold for redevelopment.
I have tried to find a print of this house, but apart from a badly photographed print in the 'History of the Wirral', I have been unable to find one - but there must be one, somewhere. I have put some feelers out with local antique dealers - but apart from that, any other ideas?
Thank you all, again for your help. I will keep you in the loop with any further advances in my research.

Have you tried Birkenhead library to see if their local studies department has a photographic collection or have you tried Wirral Archives?

I always try a bit of googling and it comes up trumps with this.

CLAUGHTON MANOR HOUSE, c.1855. This occupied a site between Egerton Road and Manor Hill. It was built about 1850 by Mr. (later Sir) William Jackson.
I recommend googling!

Thanks for that Bert. When they originally moved to Liverpool they lived in Seel Street - oddly enough when I went to that area in 1985, I went to a shopping centre and saw Seel Street not far away from it.

Yes Hilary I have tried both, a few years ago - they do have photos, but of it being pulled down. Flickr, however, has a beaut - am trying to contact its author:))
