Re: Military Hospital Maghull
Sorry, not finding anything in the Record Office online catalogue http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/calmview/ although I'm wondering whether it might not be too recent to be available. What dates are you thinking about?
Am I right in thinking Mosside was the current Ashworth?

You are indeed MaryA, although it is a much larger institution and contains Cat1 high security patients these days. As a consequence I doubt that the current management would be able to help. Home office perhaps ? Just a guess !

Checked wikipedia and it was also a merger with Park Lane, which I believe was the site in Maghull, from my memory.

I don't know if you have ever come across the forum 28dayslater, this is for people who are fanatical about gaining access to derelict buildings and taking photographs. I discovered this "report" on the site that you might find interesting, especially the first couple of pictures of the original Moss Side House.

Reading down the page there are little snippets of history tucked between the photographs, they may be accurate, but I don't know their provenance.

Re: Military Hospital Maghull
Thanks Mary and Vic, I'll have a look at the site you've put up Mary. The hospital was built in the 1830's by a Liverpool Family by the name of Harrison who were rich merchants and over many years it was among other things a Lunatic Asylum catering for people who were mainly epileptics. The Hospital was known as Mosside and in 1914 it was taken over by the Military Authorities and became known as the Maghull Military War Hospital which catered mainly for shell shocked military personel. I have a relative that was admitted to the Hospital and actually died there. I'm struggling with dates etc at the moment, most of the info I've got is family hearsay but I'll let you know if I come up with anything, thanks again,
Roy

Hi Tina,
Thanks for the welcome, had a break from researching but just starting up again. It's amazing how much you forget when you have a lay off and then cover ground you've already done, or is that an age thing!
regards.
