While going through Kirkdale Cemetery I came across this

R/C Corporal Thomas Sarsfield 43 yrs Soldier Military Hospital, Seaforth Special Public Grave Section 2 Grave Number 63. He was buried in April I'll have to go back and get the date forgot to write it down.

He's not a member of my Sarsfield clan, by blood at least. His given age at death [28th March 1915] indicates bn abt 1872 but there are no births in Lancashire +/- 2 years. This has me thinking...

Remember the awful Fry parents who seemingly abandoned at least 2 children William and Joseph in 1898, and William later died in Kirkdale Schools in 1903? The parents Thomas [bn 1864] and Elizabeth Fry [nee Pierce] vanished before the 1901 census... Thomas had a younger sister Ada Fry who had married James Sarsfield in 1891 and by 1901 Ada and James were living in Mill Lane next door to Thomas' mother Elizabeth who had been a widow since 1878.

Thought.... Did Thomas evade 'justice' by changing his name to Sarsfield? And lose a couple of years in order to enlist? James' father's name was Thomas [bn 1832, dd 1907].

However, it was not be.... before I hit the Submit button I have just found the right TS in 1911....

Anne was married at 15, had 11 children and 6 had died!

This is what I hold on him.

SARSFIELD, Corporal, T, 12471. 3rd Bn. King's Liverpool Regiment. 28th March 1915. II. R. C. 63. (Liverpool (Kirkdale) Cemetery - United Kingdom)

Born Liverpool. Son of Ann Sarsfield (she died 22/5/17) of 12 House, Soho Sq and later of 12 Rose Sq, Rose Hill, Liverpool. Enlisted Liverpool 14/10/14. Aged 41 years 270 days at enlistment, occupation general labourer, height 5' 8", weight 133lbs, eyes blue, hair brown, religion Roman Catholic. On his enlistment papers he states that he had served previously with the KLR. Appointed A/Cpl 14/10/14. Posted to 3 KLR 20/10/14. Admitted Seaforth Military Hospital 11/2/15 where he died on 28/3/15 cause i)haemoglobinuria ii) heart failure. (Soldiers Papers )
