What sort of establishments were 'Cocoa Rooms'?

Post by ZED »

... I imagine they were cafes?
On the 1911 census, the husband of my grand-aunt (Thomas Dransfield Vipond) is described as a "refreshment house keeper", his premises being: Cocoa Rooms, 42 Highgate, Kendal. (I've googled the address - it's currently a greengrocer's shop!)

Some were established by churches or chapels to counter the threat of the demon drink.

See: http://www.victorianlondon.org/entertainment/cocoa.htm

I remember a great one in Great Homer Street at the Juvenal Street end opposite Paddy's market. Did a great mug of tea and a black-market bacon sarnie as well as cocoa!

Many thanks for your replies folks ... very interesting link dickiesam.

I've enjoyed looking at the ancestors' occupations on the 1911 census returns ... one in particular has me intrigued: it has been transcribed on the 'Findmypast' website as "Cotton Popokers Managing Clerk" and I must say that's exactly what it looks like on the image of the original document! (Sorry ... that's way off-topic: I should probably start another thread!)

My guess... without seeing it is: Cotton Brokers' Managing Clerk!
