3 Birchfield Road, West Derby 1900

Post by azmara »

Georgina MACKAY, nee ROSS was buried at Toxteth Park Liverpool 18/08/1900.
The address given is "Wellwood" # Birchfield Road, West Derby Eastern. As this was not her home address,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me, or point me in the right direction!....if this place was a hospital or such?
Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum Azmara :D
Sorry no luck in Kelly's Directories.
Birchfield Rd in Fairfield ran between Edge Lane & Prescot Rd.
There is another near Walton Village.
Good luck, I'm sure someone here will be of help.

Nothing new to report apart from the fact that the property was unoccupied in the 1901 census.

Very much doubt that address was a hospital or other such institution because the address used would have been a pseudo-address without an actual name. Until relatively recently hospitals, infirmaries and workhouses would have their actual 'title' disguised by a pseudo-address that would the number on the street or road with the suffix 'a'. For instance, 144a Brownlow Hill would be given as the address of Brownlow Hill Workhouse and Infirmary.

In that area, it is almost certain the address was a private residence. The death cert should have at least two addresses on it, the home address of the deceased and the address of the informant. If the deceased did not die 'at home' but in hospital etc, a third address would be where the death occurred.

Thank you for the welcome and also thank you for the replies. Answers so much for me. Right family and explains why they appear at another place 1901 census.
Much appreciated. :)
