Military Police vs Regimental Police

Post by simone »

Hi :D

Watching WDYTYA last week with Patrick Stewart looking at the records for his grandfather, it was found that he became a member of the Regimantal Police during WW2.

What was the difference between the Regimantal Police and the Military Police?

My own grandfather was transferred to Military Police after the death of my grandmother on compassionate grounds.

Is it simply that Military Police were based at 'home' , i.e civilian life, and Regimental were with the Regiments. What would day to day work for Military Police have involved?

Thanks

The Regimental police had authority within their unit and looked after some aspects of military discipline as well as acting as 'jailers' for those confined to the guardroom. The MPs had a far wider brief and in many ways acted in similar ways to civil police i garriso towns. In the field they helped with traffic control among other things. I'm sure more is available via Google, but it is late!
