Amy Rogers/Grosart

Post by Philip Roberts »

In the course of research (What's new?) I have been told that my grandmother, Alice Mary Grosart, maiden name Rogers, gave birth to a child in 1892. This birth was registered in the name of Amy Rogers, in West Derby, ref 8b 516. My grandmother married my grandfather, Alexander Grosart and everything seemed OK. Sadly, Amy died, aged 5. Her death is recorded under ref 8b 380. Out of curiosity I clicked on the number 380 to see what other deaths were recorded under that ref. I was surprised to see that the death of Amy is recorded twice, once as Amy Rogers and once as Amy Grosart.

Is/was this normal/necessary?

It doesn't end there!

In 1898, when Amy was recorded as dead, another entry, 8b 481 shows up as Amy Rogers was born in that quarter.

I will be sending for the birth certs. but just wonder if anyone has any suggestions about the death records

I think there will be a fairly simply explanation - the death won't have been registered twice but there probably was an alias on the certificate - Amy Rogers alias Grosart (or vice versa) and this shows up in the index twice over.

I think the birth of Amy Rogers might well be a coincidence, I find an Amy Rogers in the 1901 census living in Church Road, West Derby with the family, parents Acroid? and Jane and siblings.

Thank you Mary. Your suggestions certainly have the ring of common sense. I will have to see where I can get some from!

That man/superman Troupman has got his teeth into this one and has suggested that Acroid (Ackroyd - head of family in the 1901 census) is the brother of my grandmother. I thought her name was Rogers!!! Anyway, he is digging further - watch this space.

Got it wrong again! The person Acroid is actually Acroid Rogers, brother of my grandmother. It seems they also had a daughter name Edith, (ever heard of Edith May Grosart/Jansen!!!). She is not the same as my elusive Aunty Eedie of questionable fame but the coincidences are mounting.

Well the 1901 census gives children of Frederick E 14, John A 4, Amy 3 and Stanley 1

Big gap there, suspecting a second wife.

Yes I would almost certainly say that Jane Ann was a second wife, since she had only had four children by 1911, in addition to those named above there was Archibald about 1905, presumably Frederick E and an older one Arthur, were from an earlier wife.
