Workhouse Records

can anyone tell me if there are any workhouse records (Brownlow Hill) available for viewing 1921 is the year I am interested in.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

These records are held at the Record Office, amongst others there are

353 SEL/18 Admission Registers 1869-1925
353 SEL/19 Admission and Discharge Registers (or Religious Creed Registers) 1841-1928

At the date you are interested in, I'm not positive if they are on microfilm which will be available at the World Museum, or in document form, which will mean that they are held at the Sandhills Satellite.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to contact them and check before you go as if they are at Sandhills you would need to arrange an appointment.

From your experiences, do you think that I could obtain details of my great uncle's short stay at the hospital and / or of his death there? He was admitted on 9th May 1912 and was buried from there on 15th May 1912.
Grateful for any guidance.

There certainly should be an entry for him in the Admittance Register and some sort of entry for his death, possibly burial too. They had to keep records even for such a short stay, although how much information there would be about his few days stay might not be very much.

The information that is recorded will be as follows

Date of admission.
Address admitted from
Religion
Next of kin details
Discharge date.

In the larger books which will be at Sandhills there will be a bit more info. For example his profession and whether he was a widow.

The workhouse records which I discovered when I first started researching my tree are one of the best sources for tracking your family. Also social history wise (putting meat on the bones) which I think is important when we research our tree. The staff cursed me getting all these registers out, I went home everyday black. I love the workhouse.

When I told my dad once that I had found some Donaldson names in the Liverpool Workhouse his reply to me was "None of ours where in the Workhouse we had a shop" If only he knew how many time his lot where in there it would make his hair curl.

the person I am trying to locate
is Terence Jones. I dont know when he was admitted but I know he died there in feb 1921.
so what ref numbers do I have to give when I go to the museum, or do I just give the name and year. (never done this before sorry for the dumb question)

Just go back from his date of death. On a Tuesday we have a help desk 1.30pm - 4pm. If you come then I'll show you how to get the correct film. And believe me once you look in them you will look for other entries.
Oh! and the beauty of these records are they are in alphabetical order.

Thank you both for the information. Already having the admission details and living in Cornwall, perhaps it would be cheaper to go for a death certificate to obtain details of his 'end'. As you suggest Mary, there wouldn't be much by way of medical records for him.
