Francis Chaffers - When was he born?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for the definitive birth of Liverpool born Francis Chaffers. I know that he was born circa 1782-87 and married a Mary Johnson in 1804. She sadly passed away in 1806 and Francis married Ellen Holmes in 1808.

Francis himself died in 1835 whilst working as a policeman.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just wondering how you know when he died? Do you know where he was buried? If yes the burial register should give an age at death.

Do you have any addresses for him as they may help with finding his burial place if you do not know where it is?

Francis Chaffers according to the info on Ancestry was buried on 12 april 1835 age 48 years from Sawrey Pope Street and said to be a policeman.

as the Liverpool Police weren't formed at this point he must have been with the Dock Police.

The age gives an approx date of birth of 1787. He appears to be maried to Ellen nee Hulme and they had a son Francis bn 7 Nov 1811 ch 19 Nov 1811 at st peter. Ellen's maiden name is given as Hulme. At this christening their address is given as Ben Johnson Street and Francis is a shipwright. In 1817 they are in Crump St when their son George is christened.

So you are looking for a christening around 1787. Bear in mind that not all Liverpool parish records are on line and also that the name could be easily mispelt or transcribed.

Thanks for your informative response. I am currently hosting the Wilson family tree on Ancestry for a friend, Gladys Seddon, who is a relative of the the 'late' Ron Wilson, who compiled it. As a consequence I am regularly contacted by people who have links to it and I of course help if I can, or refer them to Gladys. One such person is Maureen Siegerist who is looking for information on Francis Chaffers. This is a copy of her message to me via Ancestry:

I noticed that you had Richard Braithwaite Chaffers as one of the sons of Francis and Ellen. According to Mormon LDS records he was son of Richard Chaffers and Margaret and was born in 1829. Francis and Ellen did have a son Richard, born 14 Nov 1808, baptised 7 Dec 1808. He married Margaret Foster in 1829 and had Richard Braithwaite the same year. (Grandson to Francis and Ellen).
I am still hoping for info regarding the exact birth date of Francis Chaffers and who his father was. The names William, Thomas, Edward, Richard and Benjamin crop up, so hope it may be one of these, but there may also be a French connection!

Francis married Ellen Holmes on 1 feb 1808 at St Anne's Liverpool he is a shipwright. There is also a marriage of Francis to Mary Johnson on 15 August 1804 again Frances is a shipwright. Both these marriages are on ancestry. The one to Mary Johnson is by licence. The Cheshire Record Office may have a copy of the allegation for the licence.

There are 3 children christened to Francis and Ellen shown on Ancestry.

There are a number of wills of Chaffers family members shown on the Lancashire Will index (just google Lancashire will index) these wills are at Lancashire Record Office and it would be worth searching them for mention of a son, grandson or nephew Francis.

There are Chaffers in Liverpool going back to the early part of the 1700s.
