Guidance please on Dissolution of partnership 1861

Post by BurscoughLad »

I have found a reference in the Blackburn Standard, dated Wed 10 July 1861, which states:

"Partnership dissolved - James Aitken, John Aitken & J McDiarmid of Liverpool"

I believe the JMcD is my great great grandfather and would like to know if it is possible to determine the trade / profession / business of the partnership.

If you rephrase your post and ask for a directory look-up, you may find that a member with access to a directory of that period will oblige.

You can check Gore's Directory of Liverpool & its Environs, 1853 on the
Historical Directories Site

Aitken James, Draper 68 Gloucester Street
There are also John's, Williams and Andrew, various trades and addresses.

Can't find any reference to McDiarmid though.

1861 census has...

MC DIARMID, John - Head - Widower - 39 - Ship Broker - Scotland.
MCDIARMID, Jemima B - Sister - U/m - 34 - Railway shareholder - Scotland
Address: 7, Wellesley Terrace Princes Park, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
RG09 / Piece:2707 / Folio:61 / Page:16

Merchants and ship brokers often worked together. One importing/exporting the goods and the other providing the means of transport.

By 1871 John is a ship owner and married again with a young son. And 4 servants, so biz must have been good!
RG10 / Piece:3803 / Folio:140 / Page:2

BurscoughLad found the original reference in a Blackburn newspaper so I think the partnership may well have been connected with the cotton trade.

Thank you everyone, for your interest and loads of information.

My John McDiarmid married Stuart MacGregor in Scotland in 1847 and came down to Liverpool 1849 - 50. His first son was born in Scotland whilst his daughter was born in Liverpool.

He was a printer compositor, so it looks as this partnership was with another J McD

Again, thank you

Sorry to disappoint you, folks!!

Yes, her name was Stuart and she had eight children, so I guess she might have been female!!
