Bridewell

Post by riley »

I have just discovered on the 1911 census a Thomas Riley who was in Bridewell Prison, 10 Cheapside. I am not sure if I have the correct person althouhg the age is right (32) and the occupation of carter could be right but he was born in Dublin not Liverpool as the census has it. Also he was Thomas Joseph.
Does anyone know how I can check the identity by court records or perhaps local papers.
The rest of the family- wife Ethel Gertrude Riley, and three children were listed on 1911 census as visitors at 34 Netherfield North ,Liverpool. Head of the household was Eliza Matilda Nuttall, not known to me.

I suspect the lack of details is probably because somebody "in charge" would have completed the census information and may not have been too scrupulous over all the entries.

At the Record Office you will be able to find the local newspapers for that date, unfortunately post 1900 is not available in the old newspaper site online, and possibly the calendar of prisoners, although the bridewell may have been used more as a short term lock up rather than a longer sentence such as would have been in one of the prisons.

Hi Riley

I see your dilema..dont know if hes your man as your Thomas had a trade he was a Cooper like his dad..

There was another Thomas who in 1901 lived at Cartwright Place he was a Coal Carter born c 1880 in Liverpool, his folks were Michael & Maria Riley..in 1911 they were living in Lace Street..which was quiet near the Bridewell..so the the Thomas Riley in the Bridewell could well be this man..as that would be his stomping ground around that area..maybe one too many drinks and a brawl..

Its a tough one to say for 100% that he is your Thomas..

Re Eliza Matilda Nuttal she has Griffiths crossed out under Nuttal, can't see a connection could just be Eliza's daughter Eliza Finn was her friend, with them being of a similar age, and if it was your Thomas in the Jail.. maybe this is why she called round to talk to someone as she would have been upset
