Henry Hyde Blakey

Post by lorry »

Hi,
Does anyone know of Henry Hyde Blakey - He was superintendent of Pilotage in 1940 at Liverpool. He married Gertude Ann Wilkinson. He is listed as Master Mariner but have not been able to find records relating to this in The National Archives. He died in 1964 but I have no idea where he or Gertrude are buried.
Thanks
Lorry

What was his address at death? This would help us make suggestions as to where he may be buried.

The only obvious entry that I see about that date died in Ashton in 1963 aged 45, this wouldn't seem to be a likely person to have held that office in 1940. Is it possible he died outside Lancashire?

I don't see an entry for a Gertrude Ann Blakey, could she have remarried?

You could try the Maritime Archives at the Albert Dock for records relating to him

Henry Hyde BLAKEY

Post by dickiesam »

For the crew.....

He was born in 1876 so in 1940 he would have been 63. Very near retirement? Births Dec 1876> BLAKEY, Henry Hyde - Salford - 8d - 108.

He and Gertrude married in Birkenhead, Sept qtr 1903, and 8 years later are living at 31 Strathcona Road, Liscard, Wallasey, Cheshire. According to my good friend Crystal Ball, he is a Chief Officer.

He died aged 87: Henry H Blakey - 87 - St Asaph - 8A - 452 - 1964 Sep qtr.
If Gertrude predeceased him it is likely he is buried with or near her?
She was born in Yorkshire. She says Sheffield but fairly confident this is her:
Births Sep 1875> WILKINSON, Gertrude Ann - Hull - 9d - 213.

Well done DS.

In the circumstances I think an enquiry to Landican Cemetery would be the way forward as this is where the cemeteries and crematorium for the Wirral are managed. They may need a more definite date than just the quarter and year, but it's worth a try first of all anyway.

Found there was just one possible birth to Henry and Gertrude's marriage:
Blakey, Barbara H - Birkenhead - 8A - 1068 - Jun qtr 1915.

Could not see an immediate match for a Barbara H marriage although there are several plain Barbara ones. Then came across this one in St Asaph, where Henry died in 1964.

BLAKEY, Barbara and JONES, Malcolm R.
Registration district & county: St. Asaph, Denbighshire.
Year & qtr of registration: 1966 - March.
Volume: 8A; Page: 1071

Probably a coincidence.. Or had she been looking after her father?

Henry Hyde Blakey

Post by lorry »

Hi,
Thanks to all of your replies, this is what I know
Henry Hyde Blakey was born Oct 1876, Manchester and died in July 1964, St.Asaph, Denbighshire.
He married Ann Gertrude Wilkinson 1903 Birkenhead, Merseyside.
Ann was her name in all Census records and living with her Mother, Annie & Father William Henry Wilkinson. I have her birth year as 1874 Ecclesall, Bierlow, Sheffield Yorkshire.
She died as Gertrude in Jan 1962 at Ystradgynlais, Breconshire, Wales.
As far as their daughter, Barbara goes, born 1915 at Birkenhead, I did not have a marriage for her so will look in to the one that you have found.
This family of Wilkinson females does not seem to have produced any offspring except for Barbara. So if anyone has any clues to her marriage and family I would be most grateful.
There was another sister, Alice. who married Christian Lorck Gerhardsson Wiese in 1915. She was born 1872 in Ecclesall, Bierlow and died Oct 1949 in Wallasey, Cheshire. She also died without issue as she was 43 when she married.
I will try the cemetery that you have suggested. Maybe one of them will be there.
Any further info would be wonderful
Thanks
Lorraine

For the crew
In 1901 Gertrude 24 bn Sheffield is visiting with Blakey family in Stretford.

We need to find her with sister Sarah (see other post) together in census to prove birthplace.

I think Dickiesam has done a great job there, although it is going to cost you money the only way to be certain if this is the correct entry is by means of certificates - the death may have registered by Barbara in which case hopefully it will give her married name. The marriage certificate will confirm her father's name.

The cemetery holds the information for all of the Wirral, not just for Landican.

Hi Lorraine,
A couple pf points...
Re
Oxton Lodge No3462 records
Are you saying that Henry H Blakey was a Freemason?

Re RG12 / 2794 /132 /4....
The family in Stockport in 1891 certainly appear to be the right one, but I doubt they are there because of any connection with William joining the Navy [Royal or Merchant?]. Stockport was, as you will see from Google Earth, not a a seaport but a town in east Cheshire a long way from the sea, although on the south bank of the River Mersey. Stockport is now part of the Greater Manchester area. I would say the family being in Stockport is much more likely to do with the father's profession, travelling salesman -provisions- [as in groceries].

Incidentally, 19 year old Alice's occupation certainly fits the area. Stockport was at the centre of the country's hatting industry which by the mid 1880s was exporting more than six million hats a year.

And I am puzzled..
I found his entry in the Wirral Cemetery listings

If William Wilkinson, the father, died in Stockport why was he buried on the Wirral, a long way away with no apparent prior connection to the area? That came quite a few years later when his widow and daughters were living in Liscard, Wallasey in 1901. RG13 / 3402 / 63 / 12.

William Henry Wilkinson aged 46 years death was recorded, according to www.cheshirebmd.org.uk, in 1891 in Heaton Norris.

If this is your man I'm not sure what you mean by Wirral Cemetery Listings. There is no one Wirral cemetery and they do not appear to have their burials on the internet.

I would expect him to be buried locally to Heaton Norris.

Hi DS
Yes, Henry Hyde Blakey was initiated on 6th March 1923, and on the 3rd Nov 1937 he was installed as Master of the Lodge. He remained in the Lodge until his death in Jul 1964 (according to the records)

I have ordered 5 death certificates from the GRO and so will not be able to chase up the cemeteries until I have their death dates.
That is interesting that the family moved to Stockport but it does make sense.
William Beastall Wilkinson joined the Royal Navy as midshipman on 24th Jul 1891 and served his apprenticeship on 'Lancaster Castle'
I do have a lot of his Navy and Merchant Navy logs and records so it is not him that I need the info on. I have been working on him for 13 years. He finished as Captain in the Merchant Navy for Australia.
I am sorry about telling you that the father, William Henry Wilkinson was buried at Wirral, I meant to say Stockport.
I will now chase up what I can with the dates that I have at the moment.
Is there a Cheshire District telephone book on line?
Thanks
Lorraine
