Address in Liverpool

Post by Michele Wigglesworth »

Is there any way of finding out the members of a household in Liverpool.

I am looking for 28 Kent Street, St. Thomas,Liverpool and the date is 11 July 1885. We know a lady called Agnes Pitt was there and died there on that date as I purchased her death certificate. We know she was not there on the 1881 census as we have her living in London with some of her children.

I have been told there could be rent / rate books which would show this information, but I wondered if there was a possibility someone might know without a long drive to Liverpool. If it is we have to make the journey can somebody tell me where I might find this information.

Thanks Michele

I believe this would be an unlikely search, and I think you would perhaps need to know the landlord/owner of the property to be able to do this.

If you search the Liverpool Record Office Archivesfor the address/rent books/rate books I don't see any clues there. This would be where any documents would be held, it might be a good idea to contact them by email to ask directly and then if successful they might be able to check for you, or if the job is too big then perhaps a researcher could assist more cheaply than you travelling here.

There may possibly also be street/trade directories held at the Record Office for the appropriate year, none of our members seem to hold one for that period.

Is there any other way of looking for what you need? Who registered the death and what information are you specifically looking for?

I am looking to see if Henry Pitt the informant is also living with her.
Henry is a journeyman maker who in 1881 is living in Kent., and in 1891 has another partner back in London. We know two daughters were in Liverpool at the time - but there seems to be a history of "non marriage" in the family - I am trying to sort this for family of the Pitts overseas.
Three separate members all living in Canada, to a lesser extent for myself.

It would be nice to find out if Agnes was the only member of her family living in this house.

Thanks for your efforts

If your enquiries with the Record Office fail to produce any results, I can put you in touch with a researcher who will charge a fair price but may also know if you search isn't possible, so save wasting further money.

I have never some across rate books recording all who lived in a house at that time. You will have to look in the Gores Directory for that time to get the name of the household this will only record the head at that time.

Hello Michelle,
May I suggest you change the subject line to read something like:

Street Directories, Liverpool circa 1885

May be more eye-catching to those members who have directories for around that time.

In 1891 the house at 28 Kent Street is uninhabited.
