Hi :D

I'm thinking of having a tree printed and want to ask a question of anyone who has had one done already :wink:

Obviously it is the norm to privatise your file before sending it to anyone, but what is the best thing to do when having a tree printed :? Would you do the same then :?: For the provision of a tree to your own family would you include their birth year, place, etc.

Has anyone ever had one done privatised and then thought perhaps they should have included all details.... :?: :roll:

The company does not say to privatise, but says correct things about data protection etc and that all info removed from their records after printing.

If it's kept for future generations wouldn't the info be useful to be on there :idea:

Am I thinking about this too much :roll: :lol:
I've been going to get one done for years now, about time I bit the bullet, but so much info to consider :? :? :roll:

My thoughts would centre on who you are printing the tree for, if it was just for yourself and your close family then perhaps all details would be acceptable, but if you intended to give a copy to more distant relatives, perhaps some you don't know so well, then I would think more carefully about what information was included.

Although I haven't tried it I have heard good recommendations about a programme called Res Privita which would make the job easier if you decided to privatise some details.

I did mine in 3 parts..... a small one of me, husband children, grandchildren and parents with no full dates just year of birth no place etc then I did one of my dad and mum with full dates as they were all passed on, I had them printed by kinkos they gave me back my disk and showed me they had deleted the info. Just choose wisely

Hi Simone,
Just a note about the software that Mary mentioned, Res Privita. Apparently it is no longer available from it's original website but there's a downloadable copy here for free. Its about 2/3rds down the page:

Don't know what PAF programme you are using but most later versions include facilities for setting up trees/reports that omit any detail you specify, such as DoB, living people, etc. I believe that's why Res Privita became 'relatively extinct'.

Thanks Brian :D I will have a look at that.

I use FTM 2006. I can get up my trees and reports ok, it's just that it gets a bit complicated when you want to include certain people etc :wink: :roll:

eg My widowed grandfather married his widowed sister in law, so my mum has siblings and a half brother, and her cousins are her step siblings too. So if I do a straight forward 'Ancestors of' tree, it shows my grandparents, but doesn't show show this relationship, and I would like to show that he married twice and mum had another sibling.

I get it on an 'All in one tree' but that is just too big.

I see Genealogy Printers have an all relatives tree, maybe that would be the answer :wink:

I suppose it's a case of having a play with the options and discussing with whoever does the tree for me :)

just tidying up a couple of bits at the mo, waiting on a certificate, then hopeully I can get stuck in :)

just remember that if you do all rellies tree that it is easier to just do 3 or 4 gens at a time poster size works great then arrange on wall a a big tree

Perhaps a bit of topic for this one (sorry) but you can get large copies of anything you wish (you would have to set the paper size) - I got A1 copies of some leather working plans (my other hobby) for about £3.00 each - cheaper than photocopying - from my nearest Staples branch. Just take the file on CD / usb key / whatever and they will print it there and then.

Your tip about Staples is worth putting up as a new topic so more people than the posters on this topic will see it and make a note.

I live in rural Ireland, so no Staples, but we have some very bright and with-it printers. A pal of mine who uses Brother's Keeper had a major family/clan gathering last summer. After pondering the options for a big tree display he put a gedcom file onto a flash drive and went to a local small print-shop. After a little experimentation by the printer, for a very reasonable cost he got a set of printed trees on A0 [46" x 33"], and he even got the cardboard storage tubes for his clan members to take their copy home without folding it.
