Liverpool School Records (Kirkdale Area)

Post by dlh1 »

I'm looking for School records for the Kirkdale area about 1900 and was wondering where I can find information without knowing the exact school.

Katie mentioned that some records are held at Our lady of Reconciliation RC church. I spoke to Father Graham Dunne and he said all records have been transfered to St Anthony's but the secretary there said she wasn't aware of school records being kept at St Anthony's. Does anyone have anymore infor on this?

Thanks

Your recourse would have to be the Record Office in the hope that some old records have been deposited with them, however, Kirkdale is an old area and many of the schools are still in existence so their records may still be held. Your first job would be to ascertain the religion and their address so as to narrow down the list as much as possible.

It's often difficult to know what happens to old Registers etc. at the closure of one of my schools we delightedly examined Attendance Registers etc. from our own time and then to save them being lost, one of the ex pupils who had become a priest took them to keep in his own parish for safe keeping since there was no longer a church connected with the school. I don't know if a reference was ever noted by the LRO of their whereabouts, but I can imagine that this sort of thing may have happened in other places.

Without a school your search will be very difficult.

There is no rquirement for schools to deposit their old registers and log books although latterly some Local Education authorities have made suggestions about this.

If a school is still open they may still have their old records, however they are far to busy to deal with family history enquiries. Depending on when they shut their old registers may have been lodged at the record office. However they may have just disappeared.

The Admission registers have changed little in well over 100 years they record the child's name, date of birth, date of admission, their address and their father's name or guardian's name or it can be mother's name. They also give date of leaving and their is a column for why they left. How well they are filled in depended on the person who filled them in. Dates of leaving are not always completed.

Log books rarely mention individual children usually if they have done something amazing or sadly if they have died.

As has been suggested find the nearest school to where they were living of the correct relgion or a non denominational school and then check on the Liverpool Records odffice catalogue to see if anything for that school has been lodged. You may be disappointed.

Veronica Oldham our late Vice Chair indexed what school records are available at Liverpool and you can view the index in the Liverpool Section of the website.

I will make enquiries abour Our Lady of Rec and find out what happened to them I have a copy of the register with my brother in so I know they were there at Our Lady's

Thanks.

I'm looking for schools that were near Back Bond Street and Tenterden Street. Does anyone know the names of any of the schools that may have been in that area?

If you check googlemaps you will see that Tenterden Street is still there, depending on religion it might be worth trying St Sylvesters.

I believe they were Roman Catholic as their children were baptised at St Sylvester RC church in 1919 and 1922.

So how would I go about looking at admission registers for the local schools? Am I able to go to sandhills and ask to view the documents or do I have to phone and order them in advance?

Unfortnuatly the records for St Syls are not at Liverpool when Ron did the index she recorded everything to do with schools this also included plans of the schools, I could be wrong but the ref in the index relates to plans of St Silvestors school. Been trying to locate those school records my self for years my Mam went there

Thank you for clarifying Katie.

dlh1 the link to watch for updates is this http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9679 as a general rule anything on microfilm will be at the Museum and no booking is required. Any documents are held at Sandhills and will require pre-booking.
