Mcready family
Hi Toffeetower,
Blue70 found the family in 1871 as I did and I thought I'd add some more detail for you...
DENNIS, Denny Head M 49 1822 - Labourer/excavator - bn Kildare, Ireland.
DENNIS, Ann Wife F 51 1820 - bn Armagh, Ireland.
DENNIS, James Son M 21 1850 - quarrier - bn Belfast, Ireland.
MCREADY, Arthur Step-Son M 32 1839 - Labourer/excavator - bn Portadown [Armagh], Ireland.
MCREADY, Mary Daughter F 26 1845 - bn Armagh, Ireland.
MCREADY, James Son M 6 1865 - bn Dublin, Ireland.
MCREADY, Dennis Son M 2 1869 - bn Chorley, Lancashire.
Births Dec qtr 1868> MACRADY, Dennis - Chorley - 8e - 452.
I'd say that the head of household's forename is not Denny. There are a couple of similar Irish 'familiar' names such as Dinny and Denny. I suspect his name was actually Dennis.
I wouldn't be at all concerned at the changes in the spelling of the surname. There was a high degree of illiteracy in those times especially among the Irish immigrants. In many cases the parents would know what their name sounded like but not the 'usual' spelling.
From the above I would say that the father Dennis and Arthur were in fact navvies [aka navigators], the men who actually dug the canals. They even have a quarryman in the family, an essential member of the canal gang. It would explain why the family moved around quite a bit, judging by the births. The family appear to have come over from Ireland between 1865 and 1868.
And the actual relationships could take some sorting out! Looks like the son Dennis bn 1868 is actually the son of Arthur and Mary Mcready. Arthur is a son-in-law and a step-son? And James and Dennis are g.children of Denny and Ann. You would need the birth certs for confirmation.
Using the 1891 family as a starter I tracked down these births:
Births Sep 1874> McReady, William - Chorley - 8e - 490.
Births Sep 1879> Macrady, Eliza Jane - W. Derby - 8b - 508.
Births Sep 1883> McReady, Julia - W. Derby - 8b - 485.
You give the name as McGrady and it possible that spelling 'migrated' from the variations I've seen. Could you tell us who your 'first' McGrady was and where you have found this ancestor?

Hi,toffeetower wrote:thanks dickiesam
so it looks as though arthur was born in 1839 in portadown armagh then,
could we trace arthurs parents through that?and so arthur married mary dennis also from armagh!![]()
Before you head off down the Irish records route, I suggest we should confirm you have the right William McGrady from Chorley.
Just found this marriage which might be him:
Marriages Dec 1895> McGrady, William and Connolly, Susan - W.Derby - 8b - 925.
This appears to be the most probable marriage and you should get the marriage cert to confirm his father's name and occupation.
Stop Press! William and Susana are here in 1901:

RE:
A birth cert for one of the children would confirm the 1895 marriage as being correct or not and I suggest you go for that first, probably Edward's, your g.father.
DS
Not sure what you are referring to! In 1901 William and Susan(a) are with their 3 eldest sons before Harry and Edward, your ancestor, were born. If it is the marriage, you do need to confirm that William's father was the 1891 Arthur Macaradie/Mcready/McCreadie etc born in Portadown, Co Armagh. What does this mean then?
A birth cert for one of the children would confirm the 1895 marriage as being correct or not and I suggest you go for that first, probably Edward's, your g.father.

William and Susanna McGrady 1901
I posted the census page reference earlier but thought I'd better post the whole entry because there's something quite interesting in it, enough to trigger that old dog-with-a-bone instinct!
1901:
MCGRADY, William - Head - Md - 26 - 1875 - Measurer Timber Trade - Chorley, Lancashire.
MCGRADY, Susana - Wife - 25 - 1876 - Bootle.
MCGRADY, William - Son - 4 - 1897 - Bootle.
MCGRADY, James A - Son - 3 - 1898 - Bootle.
MCGRADY, Frederick - Son - 1 - 1900 - Bootle.
MCHENRY, Margaret - Servant - U/m - 17 - 1884 - General (Domestic) - Liverpool.
CALDER, Edward - Son-In-Law - Married - 21 - 1880 - General Carter - Liverpool.
CALDER, Bella - Dtr - Married - 19 - 1882 - Southport.
CALDER, Tom - Grand Son - 0 (11 MOS) - 1900 - Bootle.
Address: 6 Bridge Street, Bootle cum Linacre.
RG number: RG13 / Piece:3459 / Folio:112 / Page:60.
So! Whose daughter is Bella? She can't belong to W and S.
Marriages Sep 1899> W. Derby - 8b - 785: Calder, Edward to Rice, Isabella.
In 1891 there's only one Bella [Isobella] Rice and she's in Salford and born in Dublin. Had she been married before but she's only 19? The plot thickens?
