Help with searching the 1891 census please

Post by MaryA »

Hi everybody, I know how clever you are at wild searches, I wonder if you might have some luck with this family please.

I have John Crosbie who died at the end of 1911, but who was living in Dane Street, Kirkdale, earlier that year with his wife Laura. He was born approximately 1853/4 and she about 1859. They had been lodging with a John Philip and Hannah Elizabeth Pritchard (nee Maule), who I don't believe are related. They claim to have been born Liverpool.

In 1901 they are living in Arlington Street, he was 50, a dock labourer, born SCOTLAND, she was 47, born Liverpool and son Joseph was 17 born Liverpool, a general goods Carter. RG13; Piece: 3470; Folio: 42; Page: 32.

In 1895 John's daughter Elizabeth married Arthur Sinker and in 1901 they are living in Dane Street with their children Edward 9, Arthur 5 and Stephen 2. RG13; Piece: 3454; Folio: 103; Page: 34 - this has been transcribed Sinclair.

John Crosbie married Laura A Bramwell/Bramwill at St Ambrose Everton Q3 1896

Because of Elizabeth's age and that she later named one of her children Lewis I'm guessing, without actual proof until I find the missing census, that this is the family in 1881.

36 Nursery Street, St Martin, Liverpool.
John Crosbie Head M 29 Carter Scotland
Mary Wife M 32 Denbighshire
Lewis son 8 Scholar Liverpool
Elizabeth daur 6 " "
Mary E daur 4 "
James son 14 months "
RG11; Piece: 3595; Folio: 81; Page: 40

Possible marriage of John Crosbie to Mary Roberts Q3 1869 at St Peter Liverpool

Possible death of Mary Crosbie Q4 1891 West Derby 8b 269 age 43.

Very difficult to confirm this without the 1891 census, but the only one I have is LOUIS CROSBY at 29 Hibbert St Everton, RG12 2946 49 21.

If Mary's death is correct the mother should still be around in 1891, at this stage I don't know about young Mary E and James, but Elizabeth should also be around somewhere.

PS I also don't have John and Mary in the 1871 census.

Thanks for your interest and any help you might be able to give.

John Crosbie

Hi Mary,
Do you have John's father's name/occupation from his marriage certs?

Wondering if this is John in 1861?
CROSBEY, Elizabeth - Wife - Married - 40 -1821 - Scotland.
CROSBEY, Douglas - Son - U/m - 20 - 1841 - Baker journeyman - Scotland.
CROSBEY, Elizabeth - Dtr - U/m - 18 - 1843 - House Servant - Scotland.
CROSBEY, John - Son - 10 - 1851 - Scholar - Scotland.
CROSBEY, Susan - Dtr - 8 - 1853 - Scholar - Scotland.
CROSBEY, Ellen - Dtr - 1 - 1860 - Liverpool, Lancashire.

RG09 / Piece:2680 / Folio:64 / Page:4.
Address: 2 Moor Terrace, Liverpool.

If this is he, might find his parents in Scotland in 1951. I can't find the mother or any of the above children in 1871 so were they back in Scotland?
There are 6 that might be him.

Thanks Dickiesam, I don't yet have the marriage certificate as I have only just over the weekend got the details of Laura, and of course I can't be positive about Mary at present.

I will keep this family on file, they look promising.

1871 - I suppose they could be in either Scotland or Wales visiting family ....

Thanks Tina, I suspect it must be him, enumerators are never particular about the way they spell somebody's name are they? age and location are good for Lewis. Just wish we could come across the younger family in the missing censuses.

I've requested marriage certificates, hoping to get addresses, but since the first wife I believe will still have been living, I don't think the second marriage will help but it's worth a try.

That's some result! Look's like Hilary stayed up all night! Well done!
Re:

And his 1891 occupation is the same as the father John.
