Private John Frank Griffiths, Kings Liverpool Regiment

Post by Joe Griffiths »

Can anyone help me with my search for more information about my grandfather’s WW1 service.
Here are the few details I know about my paternal Grandfather, John Frank Griffiths.

He was born 9 May 1892 at 5 Tullock Street, Liverpool, son of Thomas Griffiths and Harriet (Bennett) and married Edith Rachel Rice on 5 June 1915 at Norwood Chapel, West Derby Road, Liverpool. His occupation is shown as wharfinger on the marriage certificate, so he hadn’t enlisted then.

His New Testament, issued by the National Bible Society of Scotland in 1917 is inscribed, in his own handwriting, Pte J F Griffiths, King’s Liverpool Rgt. ( no. number) Plus what appears to be 14/6/17 Arras.
Also in the New Testament, pencilled in the margins, on various pages :- Barlin 12/9/17; communion, 14/10/17 Les Brebis ; 18/11/17 Les Brebis Canteen; 3/11/18 Douai.

I checked the Medal Rolls Index cards and the only likely candidate is Pte John Griffiths, K. L.Pool R, No. 10300. M.G.C No. 70743 (or so I thought)

I contacted Joe Devereux, KLR Research and received the following reply "Hi Joe,

Spent an more than an hour trying every way to identify your grandfather but failed - I even found papers for his brother Robert who was living at 16 Schomberg St.

I have 30 'John Griffiths' in my database who served with the KLR and have tried to conclusively match one of them using the information you have provided but all attempts were inclusive.

What I can say is that your grandfather was not No 10300 - he enlisted prior to the war.

It is hard to advise you where to go next for information other than back to the family! "

Any further ideas anyone ? Thanks, Joe Griffiths, Publications Officer Liverpool & S.W. Lancs. F.H.S.

Joe
If Joe Devereux cannot find your man, it will be unlikely that anyone else can! Joe D is THE expert on the King's Regiment.
However, there might just be a clue in the Bible having a Scottish connection. The Liverpool Scottish, aka 10th (Scottish) Battalion, KLR have their own separate archives and a web site and queries can be placed via:
