Annie Cox is age 16 Scholar born about 1885, Sheffield.

Their father Joseph M Cox

Joseph Cox is married lodger age 47, occupation Navvy, born about 1854 Attercliffe. I have been unable to find mother Mary Ellen Cox and younger siblings Lily and Joseph Cox.

Can anyone tell me how I can find out why the 2 eldest children Nellie (my grandmother)and Annie Cox were sent there and why they were separated?

My father told me that the Cox family lived next door to the Mooneys (of Sheffield gangs Wars fame)

Hi,
Have you checked out this death?
Deaths Jun 1891> Cox, Mary Ellen - 31 - Saddleworth - 9a - 262.
I know the age is 4 years out from that in the 1891 census, but that wouldn't be unusual.

In 1901, there's a Lily Cox, bn Yorkshire [says Sheffield, but could be an error]: Liverpool Juvenile Reformatory For Girls, Mount Vernon Green, West Derby, Lancashire. RG13 / Piece:3495 / Folio:74 / Page:44.

Also in 1901, there's a Joseph Cox here:
COX, Joseph - Boarder - 11 - 1890 - Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
Address: 34 Copley Hall Terrace, Halifax, Yorkshire (West riding).
RG13 / Piece:4126 / Folio:114 / Page:5.

Can't offer any suggestions about why the girls were in reform schools etc, other than if the mother had died maybe the family disintegrated and they became 'naughty' girls in order to survive. I'd try to find archived records of the schools you know about. Might find why they were there. Didn't take much in those days to get yourself 'put away' by a magistrate. 75 years earlier a 15 year old child was transported to Australia for stealing a shirt!

Many thanks for the info, have been stuck with the Cox family for years. Looks as though you may have chipped off a bit more for me.
I will send off for the death cert (even though Joseph her husband still describes himself as "married and not widower).

I will also try and contact Sheffield Archives to see if they have any existing court orders or the like.

There are no surviving records for Toxteth Park.
