It just happens that I have a copy of the Lancashire Parish Register Society no 143 St Michael's on Wyre (1707 - 1765) so I looked up the marriage there. They are very reputable transcribers. Their entry reads
1720 April 25 James Bathersby (Battersby) & Elizabet Parker, travellers Pub
The abbreviation Pub appears a lot and in the list of abbreviations at the front of the book it has
pub/pu/P Publication (of banns)
I therefore think you can take it as the marriage took place after the banns were called ie not by licence.
I had a look in the book for other possible entries for the couple and found
Baptism
31 Oct 1725 Anne d James Bathersby (Battersby) (traveller)
Burials
26 March 1721
John s James Bathersby (Battersby) Tarn (a traveller)
However at the same time as the James of the marriage entry there is another James Batehrsby (Battersby) of Out Rawcliffe having children baptised. His marriage is not recorded at St Michaels on Wyre. His wife's name is not given on the entries.
Thanks Hilary will have a look at these . My James must have been alive in 1738 got a daughter born then. So this could have been his father.

The James I meant was having children at the same time as your James he couldn't have been your James' father. What I suppose I meant was have you got the correct James.
Is your person Margaret d of James Battersby, Up Raw 3 Sept 1739 ?
If yes I would suggest that this is not the traveller James (because traveller is not inserted by his name) but the other James who was earlier of Out Rawcliffe. Of course the traveller may have decided to settle down in the area.
I would investigate deaths, leases and wills in the area to see if there are 2 James living in the area later.
