William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Hi all the streets in South Everton/Kensington ..Wilmot St..Prospect..Low Hill are all in same area..also Sarah Driver who married James Tempest lived in same area too..Bengel St & Saxony Road..so William deffo belongs to..Thomas son of William Driver the Blacksmith.
Makes sense sister Sarah living near her brother..no trace of other sister Ellen AFTER 1861, and Jeremiah never marries he dies 1908..
It does look like their parents Thomas & Margaret died young her parents were in Prospect Street in 1861 with 3 of her children..so i would imagine she would have been buried in Liverpool..
There is a death for a Margaret Driver Liverpool March 1859 8b 179..can't see one for Thomas also checked parts of 1855 that havent been transcribed yet on Free BMD...

Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Thank you Collette much appreciated I will carry on looking around that area, I found some Drivers listed as Oliver and some as Drever could also be davies as I have seen that too. I agree most families lived near to each other in those days.
When William married Mary Dicks he lived with or near lots of her relatives, I wonder why he didnt continue to live near Sarah and Ellen or the Potters, will look and see if I can find more about the two families. I still havent traced William Mary John and Henry Driver on the 1891 (William would have been about 38 Mary 34 and the boys 13- 15) census yet so may be another transcript error.

Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Hi Sunshine got back to me today shes seen the marriage of Thomas & Margaret
Entry number 173, 31st May 1849.
Thomas Driver, 21, bachelor, Striker, 73 Oak Street. Father = William Driver, Smith.
Margaret Potter, 21, spinster, 73 Oak Street. Father = William Potter, horse dealer.
Both made their mark.
Witnesses - Mary Alexander (mark) and John Affleck - signed
There was a Foundary Road by Oak St so obviously had a Foundary there at some point, Thomas's dad William is in Beswick St in 1851 not too far away, I bet if we look on the 1851 its one of those census pages thats all red, gonna take a look...

Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Hi Collette
Thats very kind of you to keep looking for me. I got the certificates today from Manchester too they didnt cost too much for the photocopies and at least I have something tangible.
So Thomas fits in with all of the Driver /Potter line that I have and the address 73 and 75 Oak street implies they lived next door to each other, I will also have a look around there as the Potter family are living near there too I think.
The Potter family in 1841 are at Richmond Road Manchester , Margaret Potter marries Thomas Driver (Striker) from Oak Street Manchester. The Potters are at 350 Oldham Road Manchester in 1851 (Margaret is at this time married) and by 1861 have moved to Liverpool. (living with grandchildren William and Jeremiah although the census states "nephews - depends whose house it was I think)
The Drivers in 1841 are at 85 Stott Street ? Hulme and in 1851 33 Beswell ? Street Manchester and then 1861 27 William Street Birkenhead with granddaughter Ellen
So in addition to finding them in 1851 I think somewhere between 1858 when sarah was born and 1861 when children are all living with grandparents they must have died or moved away from their children.
In addition to that I still need to find Willima Mary and Henry and John Driver in 1891, I think this is a transcription error and I have found the rest of the families in the same couple of streets in Everton, so again its a long slog looking through to see if I can find them under another name.
Great fun as always and always better with another pair of eyes when you reach a dead end like this.
Many thanks again for all your hard work

Can't assume that, actually if the addresses you are referring to is those given by Colette, they are both 73 Oak Street, but the same address was often given to save on money, it may have saved two sets of Banns being called.lollyrs wrote: So Thomas fits in with all of the Driver /Potter line that I have and the address 73 and 75 Oak street implies they lived next door to each other, I will also have a look around there as the Potter family are living near there too I think.

Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Thanks Mary
I have the printout here and it looked like diff numbers, I know from prev marriage certs that I have that sometimes they only had to board somewhere for a night to have that place registered for the banns. I am not sure how true this is just picked up from odd addresses in marriage certificates I have ordered from L:iverpool.
Still looking and hoping for more bits and bobs, but my interest is still very much higher than it was a couple of weeks ago

They should really have been living in the parish where the Banns were called for three weeks, however there have been occasions when it's been said that a suitcase was left in the hall of a friend's house and so claim residency, this seems to have been particularly common in town, we think the appeal of St Peter's was the attraction for many couples.

Re: William Driver about 1853-1857 Manchester/Liverpool
Hi i have checked Oak Street on the 1851 I cannot seem to find no 73
2229 folio 434-435 has numbers 11 -29
2229 folio 463-464 has numbers 5 yes only one house
2229 folio 486-489 has numbers 2-26
I can't for the life of me find any other houses in this street, I have looked on descriptions of districts all around these in Hulme and dont see Oak Street mentioned again, maybe some are missing, any ideas ???

Under the heading "Known Problems about the 1851 census"
•In addition, the census returns of the following localities have been damaged by water during storage. Most of the damaged pieces are in the area of Manchester. However, through the use of new technology they have now been indexed. The Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society recovered tens of thousands of names working on a small scale to prove the technology. Ancestry.com used forensic and photographic techniques on a large scale to take names from records, which are unreadable by the naked eye because of mold and water damage. The process yielded abt 165,000 names that weren’t previously available.
2221 Lancashire Manchester
Moss-side
Hulme
Could still be many missing.
