There is sometimes an inventory with the older Wills, so interesting, and yes I've heard of people leaving their "second best" suit to a male relative and also their "best bed" to their wife.
At least it was the best bed!! :D

Shakespeare left his second best bed to his wife. Apparently this would have been the marital bed and the other "kept for best" ??

Another one going further back, so the wife gets a bed, the daughter a bed and a boulster (sic) and the son gets the rest!!

I've found 4 wills so far from my extended family but these wills have been an absolute treasure in clearing up family relationships some naming sons-in-law and nephews as well as their own children. They all left a small amount of money so it's not like they were rich, if only it'd been compulsory....

Good Lord No,

Thankfully the Martian scribe recorded some names in English, which helped.

Haha!!! not sure I'd like to undertake that either.

But joking aside, it's always worth checking out Wills, as you say many family members are mentioned and sometimes sort out relationships.

I know on Rootschat there is a forum with handwriting and/or Latin translations but you really couldn't expect this as a favour from a stranger.

I wonder what people do with something as difficult as this?
