On the National Archives website there is a section called Documents online. On this they have Royal Naval Seamen's records from the late 1800s - 1923. They have
John Llewelly born Mountain Ash Glamorgan 5 december 1876
John William Llewellyn born Tenby Pembrokeshire 4 September 1875
he is the only John William on the list.
You can download the papers which give a list of ships but no further family information. You have to pay for them.

Searching for John LLewellyn
Of the 2 John llewellyn's mentioned above the one born Mountain Ash is not the one of the 1911 census. The Mountain Ash one has a father Thomas - I found them in the 1881 census
I found John W Llewellyn aged 5 born Tenby as a visitor with possibly his mother Rhosina Llewellyn a widow also born Tenby. The reference is RG11/5406 folio 35 page 13
She is with a family called Williams in Robeston Wathan or Nathan in Pembrokeshire.
This John who is the John of the 1911 census I think I can't find in 1891 or 1901. However we need a marriage of a John Llewellyn to Rosina to prove it.
Have you any idea what John did occupation wise later in life as I presume he wasn't a Boatswain later on?
I've come across Boatswains in connection with the Coastguard service usually people from the Royal Navy went into the service I believe.

I have a photo of him probably about 6mo before his death in 1952 showing him in uniform with a peaked cap and a braid line. There appears some ring on one cuff but the photo is not particularly good.Education Officer wrote:Have you any idea what John did occupation wise later in life as I presume he wasn't a Boatswain later on?
His death cert shows him dying at Mariners Home Wallasey and the occupation as Retired Ships Boatswain (M.S) so I believe that was his lifes career. It's definately him as the informant was known to me personally.
Is there anywhere I can put up a picture for further comment ??.
Thanks for the Info

Re: Nellie WOOD(S)
I have this image also and agree with unmarried - his entry ditto's the entry missing off the top but the entry beneath his has married written in - thus his entry would have been unmarried.MaryA wrote:I don't know if this entry in 1901 is appropriate or not.
District Calypso, Vessels, Devon
John Llewellyn 24 Stoker Glamorganshire Llanpnws?
Sorry the top of the page is missing so be sure but I believe he would be unmarried.
Thanks for the Info

Nellie Woods
Having removed from the Nellie's signature with a photo editor most of the parts of the W not written over another letter it looks like the beginning of an upper case L followed by a lower case L. Did a comparison with some script samples I have and it still looks like Ll. If she was about to sign Llewellyn it probably means that John and she had been co-habiting for some time.
Re that birth in Kings Norton I posted earlier.. the crew are correct in that I jumped to a conclusion without the real evidence to hand, like the birth cert!
Now that was naughty! Sorry folks!
Just reread the info I found about 'boatswains'. The rank or occupation was primarily a Merchant Navy one, not Royal Navy. Fits with the MS (Merchant Seaman) on his death cert. Is it possible someone with access to mariner records from Liverpool might have clues about his MN service?

Unfortunately Merchant Service seamen's records are difficult to find. Some are at the National Archives, some in Southampton and some in Newfoundland.
On the National Archives website there is a research guide about Merchant Navy seamen's records which you might find interesting.
A look at Ellis Island website might show him on a ship going into New York. It might also be worth looking at passenger lists on Ancestry and Find mypast both paying sites.
