I never discussed it with my Mum, I don't know why not, expecially as I had nightmares about it until I was at least 12. I remember being slapped and kept on my own. I think it was because of toileting issues. The staff were always in smart two piece suits. I did not meet my brother until he was 3 months old. I wasn't too happy about that either I was almost six and had been the only child until then!
I would love to know where it was. I am sure it was not the one in the picture because of the wall and gates. Of to Grasmere for the weekend!

If you think the Barnardo Home in Birkdale was possibly the home you went to you might be interested that Barnardo records (including childrens' records are held on behalf of Barnardos at the University of Liverpool. This is taken from the university's website.
Barnardos
Access to records held by the University of Liverpool on behalf of Barnardos, NCH Action for Children (formerly National Children's Homes), Fairbridge and Family Service Units is restricted on grounds of confidentiality and by the provisions of the Data Protection Act. Prior permission to access records should be obtained from the organisations themselves.
I read this that you would have to contact Barnardos first to get permission but no doubt the university would tell you what to do. They would have had a few homes at the time so you might apear in their records - could be worth a try.

I drove up Trafalgar Road this afternoon unfortunately the old 16 is no longer there.

Re: CHILDREN'S HOMES
Wherever it was Marie, it doesn't sound like a nice place at all. I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience and that it affected you so badly for many years afterwards. I can imagine having a new baby brother was a shock for you after being the only child for 6 years. My youngest brother was very put out when my sister came along...he was 7 and had been spoilt rotten up to that point because he was the youngest. My sister soon became a favourite with us all except him, and he still has a jealous streak as far as she is concerned, even though he is now 62 years of ageMarie wrote:I never discussed it with my Mum, I don't know why not, expecially as I had nightmares about it until I was at least 12.
