Hi there, I have only just read this forum and can tell you a little about Stags Head Farm, Aintree. This was farmed by my great grandfather Thomas Martland, and his son Richard. My dad Thomas was born there in 1916. I know the name of Bessie Scott as she was often mentioned by my dad, it sounds like she was either a nursemaid or had a lot to do with the children.
The farm formed part of Lord Sefton's estate and the farm was requisitioned during World War 1 and my grandfather was given 6 weeks to get off the land as they wanted to build aircraft on the site. Apparently my grandfather went to parliament to appeal against the short length of time they were given but to no avail. They purchased 1 Melling Road (used to be Pat Thompson's dance studio, now a restaurant) to live in until their new farm Aintree Hall Farm, Aintree Lane was vacated and ready for them. I am almost certain Bessie went with them to Aintree Hall. Incidentally the aircraft factory only built one plane and after the war my grandfather purchased it and slung it between the two barns at Aintree Hall Farm for his sons to play in. The aircraft factory later became the British Enka.

Really interesting post. My mum used to be a dance teacher at Pat Thompson's. We used to live near to the Old Roan, and every night at the end of the shift, the British Enka used to sound an air raid siren. It used to terrify the life out of me!

I found out in the 1911 census yesterday that my relatives used to run The Blue Anchor pub by the racecourse. Never heard that before!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm only sorry that the original poster didn't become a member of the Society, nor remained a forum member, but thank you for that interesting piece of history of the area, which is nearby to where many of us live even nowadays.
