Thanks for those two items. I have now tracked back to a book 'Liverpool Banks and Bankers' by John Hughes, which states that John Moss 'had lived for some time at Mossley Hill'. It was published in 1906 so there is no chance of quizzing the author!
I shall have to wait until the RO re-opens and look at some of the old maps to see if there is one of pre-1811 date with Moss's name.

I should mention a book about Moss and his role as a director of very early railway companies. It is written by Graham Trust and has much about the Liverpool & Manchester as well as other railways. It repeats the Mossley Hill reference. I may get round to a review of it.
