Thanks to Kate and MaryA also for their advice on electoral roles.
Also some of you have mentioned the 1938 and 1960s directories. What are these please and are they only available to Liverpool or will other counties also have similar?
Thanks
James Joseph Reardon
We are very lucky that some of our forum members have purchased copies of trade and street directories so sometimes information is available from these as to residential and busines premises that wouldn't ordinarily be availabl. I suspect family historians in other counties would hold copies relevant to their own areas of research, often bought from second-hand bookshops or ebay.
There are also a number of older directories available to search for free online http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Thanks DickieSam, that is appreciated and it is my family.
I am currently on ancestry trying to find James Reardon born 1836 ireland and brother Edward born 1831 Ireland to try and work out who their parents are, James appears on the 1871 census with wife Bridget (nee campbell) as found previously on this thread, and brother Edward is living with them, but I have had no luck on the 1841, 51 or 61 census, any ideas why?
Hope you dont mind me asking
Vicki

Hi Vicki, but I have had no luck on the 1841, 51 or 61 census, any ideas why?
I can think of a couple of reason why you can't find them before 1871.
Unless you have documentary evidence to the contrary they may not have been in England or Wales on census night. Also, just because someone says in a census that they were born in Liverpool, for instance, it isn't proof they actually were. So in a prior census they could be anywhere in the country or even outside the country.
Their surname may have been mis-transcribed or the enumerator may have made an error when transferring names etc from the individual household census forms to the census returns, the pages you view on screen.
It is known that sections are missing from a number of censuses, in some areas quite sizeable chunks. You would have to read the census details for each census to find out what areas are missing. I have 'missing' ancestors in 1871 [brother and sister born in the 1860s] and 1891 [an adult who died in 1904]. I know they were alive, because the same people are in later censuses. They are probably in the missing returns.

Thanks for that, I have reread a very complicated written history this evening and I now know that Bridget Campbell's family originated from Southern Ireland (Dundalk) so I am going to assume that the Reardon's also originated in Southern Ireland so I guess they were probably over in there.
Thanks for all your help.
Vicki

Re: James Joseph Reardon
Came across all this when arranging for our family grave in Rake Lane Wallasey to be repaired. I am Paul Thomas Sampson, Sonny (Gerald) Sampson's son. I have no knowledge of James Joseph Reardon, but he may well be in the Sampson Saga, a book written about the family. One day I will track this down!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Thanks for popping up with information. The original poster for this message hasn't logged onto the forum since early last year, but hopefully if they haven't chaned email addresses they may pick up notification that there has been a response. Fingers crossed.
