Is a newspaper look up possible, please?

Post by Rosey W »

I was hunting Nancy Pinkstone way back in September, now know she was in fact Lucy Ann Pinkstone, nee Pitt, and that she died at White Ash Nursing Home, Barkfield Avenue, Formby on 10 July 1995 aged 91.

Would a newspaper look up (?Formby Times?) be possible for a few days after her death to see if there is an obituary for her? I know in family history terms this is a recent event, but I am hoping it could finally 'nail' her!!

PS - have added my name to your 'Other Areas' site, just in case any of your Lancashire relatives boarded the wrong train and ended up down here in Somerset!

I think the relevant newspapers will be held at Crosby Library, so perhaps somebody visiting there might be able to help, at that date they won't be online.

Have you wondered if the nursing home was private? could it be possible that she left a Will? I think the indexes should be available at your nearest Record Office, again those online only go up to 1966.

The Calendars of Probate can also be seen at Probate Registries in large cities. A telephone directory might direct you to the nearest. Recent years are on microfiche ( or were when I last tried).

If you have Lucy's birth cert the birth date on the death registration should match. It is certainly in the same qtr and year as the Shropshire birth below, which I presume to be the right one.

Death: PINKSTONE, Lucy Ann
Registration district: Sefton North, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1995; Month of registration: July
Date of Birth: 2 February 1904
District no: 0341A; Reg no: 47A; Ent no: 207; DOR: 795

Birth: PITT, Lucy Ann
Registration district: Wellington (Shropshire)
Year of registration: 1904; Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 6A; Page no: 744

I will be helping at the Southport group's help desk at Crosby library on Friday so if we're not busy I will look up the Formby Times then.

Thank you everyone for your help.
Yes, I have already tried the Probate Registry both for Lucy and her husband, George, but sadly there is nothing.

I have already traced Lucy Ann and her husband way back to their Great Grandparents. It is just some info around Lucy Ann's death I need.

I believe the nursing home was private, but I know it is now converted into flats.

Thank you again for all your help and will cross my fingers and hope there will be something in the Formby Times.

I am soooooo grateful for all of this.

Nancy Pinkstone - A big thank you!

Post by Rosey W »

This, folks, is nothing to do with research as such.

It is to say a huge thank you to Hilary (and those in the Forum who have helped me in my research for Nancy Pinkstone).

Hilary, in the obituary you sent me today you have given me the one bit of proof in writing that Lucy Ann Pinkstone, was in fact Nancy Pinkstone - I was right all along. Why do people change their names??

So Hilary, stand up and take a bow. I think you and the Forum is excellent - long may you both continue.

Through joining your Society and participating in the Forum I have managed to solve some of the riddle of Nancy Pinkstone, something which the Worrall family down here failed to do in 40 years!!- and they knew her!

I shall remain a member of the Society, as of course, my partner and all his family are Worralls, evacuated down here from Liverpool during WWII - and there were some very funny goings-on in his family which need investigating!!

Hi Rosey,
I am the grandson of Lucy Pinkstone and I discovered your postings last night.
I am intrigued as to your interest in my grandmother and would appreciate you enlightening me.
Thank you.
Regards,
Kevin Pinkstone
PS My grandmother didn't ever change her name, it was always Lucy but for reasons I never understood people called her Nancy.

Hi and welcome to the forum Kevin, although Rosey doesn't appear to have remained a member of the Society, but hopefully she will be notified that somebody has posted and will respond.

I've had similar issues with my maternal grandmother. She was registered and baptised as "Kathleen" but almost everyone, including her parents, called her "Catherine" and even recording her as "Catherine" in the 1911 Census. And that's before I found out that others knew her as "Kate"!!! I don't think anyone actually called her Kathleen.

I think a switch between Catherine and Kathleen is pretty common, especially with the Irish, my grandmother married twice, once in each name, and of course well known as Kate.

:D Hi I can relate to the last post - an aunt on my husband's side was always know as Ruby - even called Ruby on her marriage certificate. Her grandson spent many years trying to find her birth. I went round the block (so to speak) and researched her brothers. It was then we found her birth - she was registered and baptised as Elizabeth Ann  Rule No 2 in family history has to be don't believe all we think know

Hi Rosey. My friend is a WORRALL with Liverpool ancestors. You may be connected! Can you give any details and I'll check if it's the same family. I did quite a bit of research for him a while ago.

Regarding the name Nancy, we have quite a few Anns in our tree including my mother who were all referred to as Nancy or Nance.

Hi Kevin and Folks in this email stream

Im sure we are related too. Kevin did you or your brother ever serve in the Royal Marines? I seem to recall a story my Grandfather told and recall it may have been Nigel.

Interesting Nancy was from Wellington. There is a whole cluster of Pinkstone's from that area back in the early 1800s through mod 1900's.

Great collaborative research on Nancy. Sorry to hear your she had passed.
