Another Book to Review

Post by MaryA »

Hi everyone, once again the lovely people from the History Press have offered us another Liverpool book to review, sounds interesting. The offer is open to the first Society Member to contact me then it will be closed. The book will be sent to you to enjoy and give a review on our Board and also forward for inclusion in the Journal. Please contact me for details of how to obtain the copy, description below:

I am writing from The History Press to make you aware of one of our publications titled Liverpool Ghost Signs by Caroline & Phil Bunford. Ghost signs’ are the faded remains of hand painted adverts which once advertised specific businesses or products and can be found on many buildings around Liverpool. This evocative new volume profiles hand-painted advertising from across the city and investigates the companies that commissioned the signs that are now faded on the brickwork of buildings.

From food and drink to alcohol and tobacco, all aspects of the commercial, craft and advertising history of Liverpool are featured and both local businesses, such as Prebbles the chemists and the grocers, John Irwin and national businesses such as Hovis are included in this fascinating look at the layers of history on Liverpool’s streets. In stark contrast to the ephemeral nature of modern advertising, many of these vintage signs are still visible today and the stunning typography and design is recorded in glorious full colour photographs. These captivating archive images are brought to life by Phil and Caroline’s insightful commentary and reflect the changing nature of commercial advertising.

As an organisation that is dedicated to the area, I am enquiring as to whether you would like to review or feature the book in any of your publications or on your website. I would be more than happy to provide you with a complimentary copy should you want to review the book or with any other material that might make an interesting feature. Also, it would be great to discuss the possibility of the author doing talks or participating in events where possible.

Hopefully this is of interest to you and I look forward to hearing your response.

It needs someone who knows Liverpool better than I do.
