Seeking some pub names c1870

Post by Ste »

Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help put some names to some Liverpool pubs c1870 that my ancestors had connections with?

27 Hatton Garden
44 Hatton Garden
54 Great Crosshall Street
40 St James Street

Thanks for any help,
Steve

I looked in a 1909 licensing book, but none of those addresses match any licensed premises listed. Sorry! It may need a look in a directory of the right year, but not all pubs had names then.

Thanks very much for looking daggers. I did get these addresses from Slaters 1869 directory and no pub names were given. I've checked some other directories too. I didn't know that not all pubs had names in those days - interesting info. Maybe these pubs never had names.

Many thanks. :D

Afterthought: could the streets have been renumbered between 1870 and 1909?

Hi Ste
A lot of people were beer sellers, through the front window of their parlour.
If you give us some names we can look in census, if you don't already have the info.
Cheers

Hi Tina and Mary.
Actually I already have all the census info for these ancestors its just the pub names that I was after (the censuses only state the addresses). I have checked a number of directories and I have checked local newspapers from the time (eg mercury) but to no avail. I suspect that daggers has hit the nail on the head, that these premises didn't have pub names, that was a possibility I was previously unaware of so I'm grateful for that information.
