Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street - any pictures?
Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street - any pictures?
Hi all, I'm looking for any images of Holy Trinity Church, Toxteth. Opened 1858 and demolished about 1940 - I'm sure there are some in the archives but I thought I'd appeal to you first

To save anyone looking, there is no pic in the book 'Churches of Liverpool', and this was well researched by its author.

There was a postcard for sale on E-bay a couple of years ago, advertised as Holy Trinity, Toxteth. For what it's worth here is the small picture from the auction:

No, Swainbanks was St Deiniol's Welsh Church.
There were a couple of other 'Holy Trinity' churches around, but the Toxteth one was at Parliament St. near the Northern end of Beaufort St. I think photos of it are 'rare'.
Approx. position was near here:

I think it's further down, nearer the bottom of Parliament Street. Liverpool History Projects show it near the corner of Beaufort Street.

Re: Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street - any pictures?
The 1906 Godfrey maps show that it was, as Mary says, near the corner of Beaufort St, about 3 houses from the corner. The only description of it that I have seen is a single sentence:
"The front is of plain brick, hemmed in between the houses." (James Picton 1872)
It seems strange that he wouldn't have mentioned the wonderful interior that is shown in the postcard (many thanks for posting it Marky, I think 'rare' is understating it!)
Holy Trinity, Toxteth was offered for sale as a site suitable for development then demolished in 1940 and now has 1970s housing on it.
Thanks all

Re: Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street - any pictures?
Ok, so I just took a closer look at that postcard and got very excited... here is a photo of another lost memorial, one that I believe was originally from Holy Trinity, Toxteth, was later in the Slaughterhouse Pub then disappeared.
Am I imagining things or is that the memorial on the far right of the postcard with flowers in front of it? I guess the pub may have removed what I presume to be a figure of Christ as you wouldn't want that staring down on you in such a setting!

I have looked in my index and some of the names that are recorded on that memorial are from the Toxteth area.

As far as tracking it down goes, I'm hoping the Echo will be interested and I'm waiting for the LA to get back to me with who owned the pub in the early 1990s.

Re: Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street - any pictures?
If you are on Facebook there is a Group called "The Four Squares". This is a group mainly for photographs of Liverpool and there are quite a number I haven't seen before.
Although your chuch would be a little out of the area in question, description being "a massive Liverpool archive. The Four Squares area is from St Anne Street to Shaw Street Park and from Islington to Everton Brow and anywhere inbetween or skirting this area that offered so much." I think it would be worthwhile to post a request and see if somebody could help.

Thanks Mary, I've spent more time than I can spare browsing through their photos but I never thought to post a request! I'll give it a try.
