Star and Garter pub/hotel

Can anyone give me any details of the Star and Garter pub or hotel which was around in the 1890s. What was the address? Where would I find a photograph or records?

There was one of that name in 1800, in Paradise Street. I will check later in a list I have for 1909.

A trawl down Paradise Street in the 1901 census produced two 'residential' public houses, although they were not named unfortunately.

The City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book of 1909 has no premises in Paradise Street named Star & Garter, nor is there one in Queen Square.
BUT, at St John's Lane, just round the corner, there IS a Star & Garter listed, whose licensee/manager was W. Henry Hulse. The owner was Mrs Buchanan. It had a door into Queen Square and a room on the first floor licensed for music and singing. In 1908 the licensee was fined 10s [50p] and costs for having an 'unjust measure for use'. The licence was refused in 1918.

The 1911 census has the Star & Garter listed as 16 St Johns Lane.

Thanks very much for all the responses - so it looks very much like it was the Star & Garter on St John's Lane.

So, just a couple of final questions, not knowing Liverpool and St John's Lane at all, is the hotel likely to be still there or would it have been demolished some time ago.

Where would I find a photograph of it? Is there a web site or book you could recommend which has old photos of Liverpool?

Apparently there was a Star and Garter Tavern in Paradise St, 1792.

In one of the books by Freddie Connor, 'A Pub on every Corner', Vol. 1 covers the city centre. On page 61 there is a photo of Queen Square in 1920 when it was the setting for a fruit and veg market. Central to the picture is the old Stork Hotel, but at right angles, and clearly backing on to St John's Lane, is the back of the Star and Garter Hotel.

If you Google 'St Johns Lane Liverpool' and click on Images, one of those is a postcard of old Liverpool, showing St Johns Lane. I suspect that the building you you are interested in may be the one with the red tinge, far left, which I suspect does not remain today though some of its neighbours do.

Whilst looking for information on Paradise Street, Ive just come across this thread and also a very interesting old photo of Paradise Street Cica 1938....

You may spot the Star & Garter pub on the corner of Paradise Street and College Lane.... I estimate this to be 39 Paradise Street.

Being some 48 years after 1890, it might be a different pub and a strange co-incidence or even the pub you were searching for. Nevertheless I decided to register for this forum and alert you to this fact.

I am very interestedo see that view as an ancestor was reported as having died in the Star & Garter, Paradise Street, in 1800. Does anyone think that the building on that 1938 view could be that old?
