Fountains Road

Post by Daisycakes »

I have found a Charles Taylor born 1874 in liverpool. soldier no 2604 attested into the Militia with the 4th Battalion Liverpool Regiment in 1893. He says his address is 43 Fountains Road Kirkdale. But that is all the info on the FMP (USA site) I am hoping he is my grandfather...the rumour in the family was that he served in the Boer War and was injured but that was all it was until I found this.

I do have him in all the previous census's /birth certs marriage certs etc.
In 1891 and 1901 he was in Almondbury then in 1906 he married my grandmother in Pembrokeshire. I dont have him in 1911 spent many hours searching and had help from the crew all to no avail.

My reason for thinking that this soldier is him is that I know he was living in 68 Fountains Road in 1914 and then in 60 Fountains Road in 1921...((when my mother was born))

My question is how can I find out who else was living in 43 Fountains in1893 maybe he was living with some of his family.

Ann :) Sorry should have placed this in the military section  Could a moderator do that for me Thanks :)

As the posting refers to the address in Kirkdale rather than his military career, I'm leaving it

Well I tried the 1901 census where there is a William & Elizabeth Horswell, son in law William Marsden and his wife and grandchildren and boarders Mary Malbone? and Charles Keenan. But when I tried to check Fountains Road in 1891 I had difficulty finding it, even checking the street index on the National Archives http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.go ... _Index_C-F doesn't show Fountains Road, anybody any luck?

Alternatively if anybody has a street directory?

Thanks for looking Tina :)

Bert...my grandfather was actually Charles William Taylor b 1874 liverpool and I'm told the army papers didnt always have the full name. Sometime after 1881census and 1891 census he was in Almondbury with his mother and siblings ((his parents originated from Yorkshire as did all of their ancesters as far as I can tell)) Hes living with his brother in 1901 in Almondbury and then 1906 marries my grandmother Crissie in Pembrokeshire after that I only have the birth/death certs etc.
I did wonder if with the army connection at that time in Pembroke ((Crissies 2 sisters married soldiers)) that perhaps that is where they met?

My grandfather lived with us up until I was 8..used to give me a threepenny bit for sweets on a Saturday morning I digress
I do have all info except his time in the army...soooooooo I'll have to keep looking and clutching at straws cos ya just never know .

Thanks again Ann :)

He was a Fitter in 1906 and lived what looks like The laundrey Goodwirk or Goodwink Llanwnda...
When the first child was born 1907 in Llanwnda he was a labourer railwayworks On her death cert 2 weeks later he was a fireman on a passenger boat. Then the next child b 1914 in Liverpool he was an Engine Fitter Journeyman ...both of these children died within weeks. The next where 1919/1921 ((my mum)) and 1924, on all 3 birth certs he was a Gas Company Engineer/Fitter...and remained so until he retired. Some while ago I wrote to the archivist at BG but never got a reply...however DS advised me that there were many independant gas companies at that time...so no joy there.

Thanks Hilary ...

Hi there Daisycakes

The following might be a source for help.

If you Google
'National Gas Archives Family History'

it will bring up the following site:

LINK: National Gas Archives Family History Local History.

If you click on it you will be connected to a rootschat forum section for gas employee matters etc.

Sorry I can't give you a direct website, I don't seem to be able to get into it any other way.Maybe Mary A will know.

Many served in the Boer War with makeshift units. If my memory serves me, 4th Battalion of the King's Regiment was a Volunteer unit, pre-Territorials, and part time. Many adventurous Volunteers volunteered so to speak. There could be a Charles Taylor in the medal list under a different unit.
