Mary Jane McHugh
Mary Jane McHugh
I am looking for the birth certificate of my Grand Mother Mary Jane McHugh, daughter of Patrick & Emily McHugh (nee Peters).
According to the 1911 Census she was living in 112 Hartington Road Sefton Park, working for the Pond family as a nanny, her age was given as 29 with an approx birth date of 1882, with the birth city of Liverpool.
I have had 4 attempts at purchasing her birth certificate from the GRO but none of them have the correct parents.
I know quite a bit about her: married in 1918 to Thomas Wilson in St Clare's Catholic Church Toxteth Park age at the time 36 years, she died in South Wales in 1964 age at that time 82.
Any help would really be appreciated if only to be pointed in the right direction
Thanks

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
Hi and welcome Mary
Can you tell us if you have found her on the census prior to 1911? where did you get her parents names from?
I can see Mary Jane McHugh on the 1891 b c 1886, but dad's name is Philip not Patrick. Just want to check as a correction has been done on Ancestry re her name by someone called 'BellDavies', and as your name is Bell is this you
could you tell us the wrong one's you have purchased, ( i.e year, quarter, and district) and if possible list all details from her marriage cert including witnesses.
Thanks

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
No I have not found her before 1911 - yes I did do the amendment on the 1891 and belldavies is my ancestry name, I changed it because there was another child on the census Agnes E McHugh which is her sister's name and was of a similar age. and a mother Emily McHugh
Marriage 18th August 1918 to Thomas Wilson aged 44 living at 41 Maitland Street Toxteth Park. No father listed but his mother Eliza Wilson. Her father listed as Patrick McHugh deceased, who was a joiner. Marriage at St Clare's Catholic Church, Toxteth Park Witnesses:- William Evans who I think was my mum's uncle. and Amy Irene Pond who was my nan's employer at 112 Hartington Road. Toxteth Park.
Most of the information was on a scrappy piece of paper that my mother did for me before she died, who was Mary Jane's daughter Moira Joan Wilson.
Certificates:-
Mary Jane Mc Hugh 1st qtr 1882 (twice) 8b 180 Liverpool
Mary Jane Mc Kew 3rd qtr 1881 8b 599 West Derby
Unfortunately can not find the last one.
Thank you for your help

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
Hello Mary,
Re:
Re:
The next time you try for a birth cert make sure you quote the father's name. While the GRO withdrew the Reference Checking facility some years ago you can still enter parents' names by only entering the year and omitting any index references [Volume, Page, Quarter, etc], even if you have them and ticking the No box. A new page will open for names etc and the GRO will search 1 year either side of 'your year'. If they can't find the right cert you should get a full refund.I have had 4 attempts at purchasing her birth certificate from the GRO but none of them have the correct parents

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
Because Mary Jane married in an RC church I would have thought there would be an RC baptism. Have you checked the Ancestry Liverpool collection? And I would go back to at least 1875... Not unknown for a spinster to fib about her age even if only to gain employment.
For example...
MCHUGH, Mary Jane
Registration district: Liverpool.
Year of registration: 1876; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 200

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
Thank you everyboby for your help.
Indeed you are right, it does look like my mum got it wrong with Peters instead of Percival.
You have certainly set me on a new route. Is it possible that he could have been Phillip Patrick? I go by the name of Mary in day to day life but on official documents I use my first name which is Cecilia?
This is get to be an interesting seach - I have Emily McHugh's death cert with her husband listed as Philip McHugh for 12 May 1903 at 35 Rokesmith Street the address on the census for 1891, with the informant being M.J. (Mary Jane?) McHugh daughter, I also have PATRICK McHugh's death certificate for 14th October 1910 in Workhouse West Derby, which also has the informant as M.J. (Mary Jane?) McHugh daughter of 112 Hartington Road which is definitely my grandmother.(1911 census)
Bert, thank you for 28 Hawarden Avenue - she did have a pet names of Jenni so this is a good find thank you.

Re: Mary Jane McHugh
Still can't see the marriage
I wonder if Mary Jane was born Percival
there are a few candidates throughout the 1880's in both Runcorn and Liverpool
