Long lost Cameron!
Long lost Cameron!
Hey!
I've been trying to search my grandfather Francis Cameron (dec 1930 - dec 1988) for 2 years.
I know that his mother is Hannah Mitchell and she married twice once to someone eight the surname kavanagh (not got paper to hand) and once to Duncan Cameron.
When Hannah married her maiden name was listed as kavanagh on ancestry website. She had a daughter with Margaret Hannah kavanagh born 1910 ( again memory only) who married John Lyons.
The problem is that I don't know when Duncan was born or were BUT I know he died in 1931.
I am at a loss as the Cameron is the ONLY bit of my tree I havnt been able to break!
Grandad said his father was not mentioned on birth certificate BUT we've been told Duncan Cameron was his father since.

Morning Singo
In the first census for Margaret Hannah, Hannah Leigh Kavanagh is 24 married 2 yrs to Alexander 27 miller's labr all bn Lpool, 11 Etna St Everton. Marriage 1908 W Dby.
Lancs BMD have a marriage at St Philip's 1918 to a Duncan Cameron. No asterisk for maiden name and no middle initial of L.
This would fit in with the death of Alexander 32yrs in 1916.
If some kind person could look up the marriage for you it would give some details for Duncan.
Did you find his death in 1931 in indexes? if so, it should give his age.
I haven't found it.
Just to confuse everyone there is a birth in 1926 for a Francis J.H Cameron but the maiden name is Mitchell!

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Hi,
Was your g.father bn a Cameron, Kavanagh or Mitchell? And when and where did he die?
I couldn't find a Francis Cameron bn abt 1930 [+/- 3 years] in the GRO, so searched earlier from the 1918 marriage and found this:
Birth: CAMERON, Francis J H
Registration district: Liverpool
Year/qtr of registration: 1926 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Mitchell
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 22.
The maiden name is correct so I assume this is your g.father. Where did the 1930 YoB come from? And did Duncan Cameron die at sea?
This death for a Francis J Cameron is a very close match if the birth was registered the following qtr.
Name: CAMERON, Francis Joseph
Registration district: Liverpool
Year/month of registration: 1988 / December
Date of Birth: 6 December 1925
Volume no: 36; Page no: 765; Reg no: 1288.

You need to buy [or find] his birth cert to confirm that story.Grandad said his father was not mentioned on birth certificate BUT we've been told Duncan Cameron was his father since.

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Puzzled by the marriage entry:
Did Duncan's mother marry twice and he took the name of his step-father? I sense a tangle web...Duncan Cameron, 34, Bachelor, Merchant Seaman, 14 Sutcliffe Street, John Coleman (deceased). Ships Carpenter.

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Hello everyone thanks for the feedback being so quick
the information you've all provided is awesome and I really appreciate it! I can start building up the pieces
I can't afford to get the birth cert just yet but will look into it!
I wasn't sure with dates as for 1 forgot when he was born but secondly he thought he was born outside of wedlock so that's why his past is all hear'say.
I shall definatley be looking into this further
Once again thanks so much

Thanks Juno for marriage & D.S for wombating
I'd say the birth in 1926 is him. Mitchell was her maiden name not Kavanagh.
Lovely reply Gem, we shall wait and see what you come up with.
Not at 14 Sutcliffe in Gores 1911.
Cheers

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Not been on this for some time as have become an aunt and have been doing some thorough research.
I know that My grandad Francis Cameron his mother was Hannah Leigh mitchell. Hannah mitchell Married alexander kavanagh and they had Margret hannah kavanagh. When Alexander died, hannah leigh married Duncan Cameron in 1918 and they had my grandfather.
I have the marriage certificate for Duncan Cameron and Hannah Leigh and it says Duncan father is a John cameron who is deceased. to make matters even worse ..... on Francis cameron birth certificate no father is mentioned
who says family trees are easy? haha I have traced EVERYONE else back to 1600 apart from this

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Welcome back Singo
Was the birth rego prev listed with mother's maiden name of Mitchell the correct one?
No father listed you said, so perhaps Duncan wasn't Francis' Dad??
Death for a Hannah L Cameron Prescot rego 1956 aged 69yrs.
Hannah & Duncan married in 1918, no offspring until Francis.
Seems a bit strange?
Just to go back to your 16th June post where you say you know Duncan died in 1931, there is also a death for a
Duncan Cameron in Lpool 1922 bn 1883.
Thanks

Re: Long lost Cameron!
Hi,on Francis Cameron's birth certificate no father is mentioned
The unfortunate reality is that with no father named it is pretty certain that he was born out of wedlock and any assumption as to his father based on later 'evidence' such as his marriage cert having a father named on it is simply guesswork. To avoid the stigma of having an unknown father, children who were illegitimate often put down a name in the space for Father on their marriage certs which was either a complete fiction or based on family hearsay/rumour which cannot be substantiated.

Re: Long lost Cameron!
For sure Mary!!
I've sister & brother marrying brother & sister (if that makes sense)
One man married, wife died and he married her sister who didn't want the child, her own nephew..
Gave him to my Nan to bring up. I was 50yrs old when it was revealed my Uncle was in fact my Dad's cousin not his brother....
... the list goes on.
GR8 stuff
Got another good'un. My twin cousins, their mother was in fact their Auntie who adopted them.
Her sister left them at 6 weeks old to go to the corner shop for some cigs and was never seen again.
She nicked off to USA with a G.I they found out later.
