Lillian Heathcote PATTON

Post by josmum »

My husband's father was married twice, the first time to Lillian Heathcote PATTON, 26 Apr 1930, Liverpool Register Office, her father's details given as (blank) PATTON, occupation blank. She died the following year from cancer, aged 26. I am trying to trace her and her family in 1911 census, when she would have been 5 or 6.

I think her mother may have been unmarried, given the lack of details on the marriage certificate, but I cannot find any suitable 'candidates'. I have looked under Lilian/Lillian HEATHCOTE and PATTON plus alternatives. Has anyone got any suggestions as to her whereabouts? I presume she was born in Liverpool, though she may not have been.

Possible birth registration -
Births Liverpool
PATTON Lilian
Dec qtr 1905 Vol 8b p121

Possible death registrations -
Deaths West Derby
WILKINSON Lilian M, Age 26
Sep qtr 1931 Vol 8b p251
or
WILKINSON Lillian, Age 26
Sep qtr 1931 Vol 8b p459

I really would like to find out more about Lillian, to give her a proper place in my family tree. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Where were they married? I was just wondering if it was a Catholic church there might be more information in the church's actual marriage register.

Hi and welcome to the forum. The marriage certificate is one of the first starting places, they married West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended, which could well mean an RC church. A priest often cross referenced a marriage to a baptism, so the parish register should be checked unless you knew for sure that it was a Register Office marriage.

It could be worthwhile approaching the Liverpool Register Office with the quarter and year of the death, and the husband's name and address and asking them if they can provide you with the death certificate, although of later years the exact date of birth was asked for the certificate, it wouldn't appear that they did at that date, so that line of enquiry may prove a bit of a dead end.

Education Officer and MaryA, I already have the marriage certificate, I just gave Lillian's details, sorry should have given the full details as follows -

Marriage solemnized at the Register Office, West Derby, Liverpool
E60 26 Apr 1930
Eric Arthur Wilkinson, 22, Bachelor, Printers Book Keeper, 10, Rydal Street, Everton
Father Joseph George Wilkinson, Occupation Meat Importers Book Keeper
Lillian Heathcote Patton, 24, Spinster, , 56, Whitefield Road, Everton
Father (first name blank) Patton, (Father's occupation blank)
Married in the Register Office
Witnesses Mrs E Murray, Joseph George Wilkinson

I have thought of sending for the death certificate, but a) Not sure which one it is, probably the second one, but possibly the first one, with the initial wrongly transcribed; b) as you say MaryA, at that stage little information re birth date was given, and probably no indication of her father's name, unless he registered the death.

Simone, I'll check Maria Lillian Heathcote out, thanks for that. Pity no father's occupation given.

Thank you all for your suggestions

Ellen Patten 40 wife
Frank Patten 6 son
Lillie Patten 5 daughter
Mary Patten 2 daughter

husband Thomas is listed on the schedule age 43 born Liverpool, but crossed out. His occupation is Donkeyman, Industry; Shipowners and he is marked as 'AT SEA'

Nice find Alison... but I can't see her either :(

Wonder if Heathcote may be a bit of a red herring... my grandfather's middle name was Parkin.. we were all convinced that this would be a surname carried down through the family... turned out just to be a name and was quite common as a christian name at that time

I am speculating here...
Lillian Heathcote bn 1905 isn't coming up in the census after 1901 and she isn't in the Deaths Index under that name.
So... is her mother living over the brush as a common-law wife in that census with a surname we don't know, but it isn't Patton or a variation? And after the census somehow acquires Patton which Lillian adopts as her own surname?

And re this from Simone:
Found this baptism on Ancestry
Maria Lillian Heathcote
Birth Date: 9 Feb 1903
Baptism Date:3 Mar 1903
Parish:Sacred Heart
Father's Name: Christopheri Heathcote
Mother's Name:Elisabeth Francescae Parsonage

haven't had any luck tracing Christopher on census yet
Coincidence, or free to marry at last....?
Christopher Heathcote married Elizabeth F Parsonage
Registration district: Chorlton, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1915; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8C; Page no: 2020.

Was Christopher a married man on a bike in the last census?
HEATHCOTE, Christopher - Lodger - Married - 35 - Cycle mechanic - Liverpool.

There is another birth on Anc for a Margaret Ann Heathcote with the same parents.

FreeBMD has the following:
Birth Mar 1872
Elizabeth Frances Parsonage, Liverpool 8b 86

Marriages Mar 1899
Elizabeth Frances Parsonage to John Pearch Liverpool 8b 86

Marriages Sep 1915
Elizabeth F Parsonage to Christopher Heathcote Chorlton 8c 220

From Familysearch, in the latest census, Elizabeth Frances Heathcote is a patient at an institution in Blackley Manchester. Christopher Heathcote is living in Coventry.

So if Elizabeth is in hospital and Christopher is in Coventry....where are Margaret and Lilian??

Liverpool History Projects also has an Elizabeth Heathcote baptism in 1897 - parents Christopher Heathcote and Elizabeth Parsonage.

So Elizabeth Parsonage has a child to Christopher Heathcote in 1897, married John Pearch in 1899, has another 2 children to Mr Heathcote in 1900 and 1905 then finally marries him in 1915.... :?

I was hoping to discover Elizabeth Heathcote had married a Mr Murray so she could be the Mrs E Murray who was witness at Lilian Heathcote Patton's marriage....but alas not!! :)

Hi Alison,
Have you found John Pearch in the 1901 to confirm who he married in 1899?

PEARCH, John married either PARSONAGE, Elizabeth Frances or SUTTON, Rachel.

Wow!!

I went to bed early with a book last night, get up this morning and see all the activity! Thank you all for beavering away for me.

I'll look carefully at all these finds, to see if I can make anything concrete from them, or they may lead to other finds. In most of my research, I have found that you need family knowledge to take you back to 1901/1911 census, but nobody in the family knows anything about Lillian, or is particularly interested. I am on a bit of a personal mission here - my daughter died of cancer last year, aged 26, just like Lillian. She was engaged to be married.

Morning folks,
Re Pearch and Parsonage.
What do you make of this lot.... 1901!

PEARCH, John - Head - 59 - Licensed Victualler - Wrexham, Denbighshire
PEARCH, Elizabeth - Wife - 39 - Bristol, Gloucestershire.
PEARCH, Elsie - Dtr - u/m - 21 - Birkenhead, Cheshire.
PEARCH, Mabel - Dtr - 15 - Birkenhead, Cheshire
PEARCH, Edith - Dtr - 13 - Birkenhead, Cheshire
PARSONAGE, Mabel - Step-dtr - u/m - 17 - Draper's Assistant - Birkenhead, Cheshire
PARSONAGE, William - Step-son - 10 - Birkenhead, Cheshire.
Address: 68 Upper Pitts Street, St George Hotel, Liverpool.
RG13 - Piece: 3414 - Folio: 160 - Page: 23

Death: PEARCH, John
Registration district: Liverpool
Year of registration: 1927; Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 85
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 171

If the above Elizabeth is the one who had children with Christopher Heathcote, it looks to me as though there was a divorce from John Pearch which could account for her using her former name when she remarried in 1915.

This is getting weird...
In the next census John and Elizabeth [noted as Frances Elizabeth] are living at 43 Wycherley Road, Tranmere, Birkenhead with a daughter Stella Marjorie bn abt 1904, the only child to that marriage. They have been married for 12 years.

Are there 2 Elizabeth Frances Parsonages? Otherwise she was leading something of a double life. The one that married John Pearch had been married before.

Death?:
